  1. Education in Kosovo: The Sharrcem recruitment experience

  2. Where we stand • The plant has been privatized end 2010 • Significant needs of investment • Environment, Safety, Efficiency • Completed: Environmental EU compliance, Mgt Systems in place, Automation and Quality, OH&S • Underway: Manufacturing efficiency updates => kiln and grinding capacity, energy recovery, Alternative Fuels • Employees: A challenge; (i) average age and (ii) new skills needed for a state-of-the-art plant

  3. Needs for Skills • Internal / Group-wide programs: • extensive and focused training offered to the employees (in Kosovo and abroad) • financial support to staff for personal educational development • ICT skills enhancement; increase number of users of work-specific tools • Nonetheless, a whole new generation of technical manpower is needed: capacity to run modern technological equipment and suitability to evolve and man future Management Board

  4. Our experience • Base attitude of young persons/candidates: very positive • A couple of great recruitments: rather by chance • For a systematic build-up of the required teams we faced severe skills shortcomings • Business: financial => had to employ Macedonians • Technical: even more alarming => engineering, mechanical, electrical, automation and controls => we still insist but seems like we are looking for a needle in the haystack Two points to consider: (a) Kosovo strives for FDI; Local skilled manpower is crucial for the investor; (b) Kosovo has an excess of young labour output which, eventually, is offered abroad – if skilled, the benefit would be multiplied.

  5. Our experience • Why so? • Inadequate level offered by the State: • Secondary level • University • Vocational education non responding to industry needs • Does not offer a real alternative to third degree education • The only way, to my opinion, is to act exactly on the right spot on the line

  6. Our position • Sharrcem, according to its Group guidelines is committed to the International CSR principles. Education is a primary scope. • Therefore, while in search of future managers, we will keep on Creating skills from scratch through dedicated programs to young recruits Developing the young generation through our CSR activities Participate in country-specific programs to develop a sustainable and competent educational background in Kosovo

  7. Thank you for your attention 29
