  1. About LuxformLuxform is a Hong Kong based company with factories located at both Hong Kong and Shanghai. Luxform provides rapid prototype services and small batch productions. They also offer reversed engineering with a 3D scanner and mechanical engineering design for their clients. Luxform provides Stereolithography (SLA), Direct Plastic Laser Sintering (DPLS), CNC Machining, RTV Moulding and Investment Casting techniques. Theo Schepens (1961) is a Dutch artist involved with Luxform. During the first part of the project he was in China working with the company on the production of his own works. For this project he will be the primary contact between the project team and Luxform Project ObjectiveThe objective of this project is to create a responsive designer toy. Designer Toys are a movement in puppetry with high finishing and often created by an established designer. They are collectables for people who are tired of mass production and only a limited amount of each toy will be produced. The goal for this project is to add a simple form of interaction to a newly designed toy. Keywords: Interaction, Designer Toy, Low cost, Rapid Prototyping

  2. Concept Most designer toys are aesthetically pleasing, but do not contain any form of interaction. Though slowly a market of designer consumer electronics is evolving. This is where our concept comes in. The concept approach has been to develop a character and give it a shape which matches its character. The character is derived from it’s interaction and is ambiguous; the creature appears to be pitiful but has also an evil side to him. The interaction of this character will be based on light and audio input. The creature dislikes bright lights and loud sounds; he prefers to hide in a dark corner. The user can interact with the toy for example by protecting him from the light or torture him by placing him in the windowsill. Loud sounds will evoke a skittish movement of the toys ears. Longer loud audio signals will take the toy out of his comfort. The toy will react on this by covering up his eyes with his ear and make panicked sounds. Character key words: afraid for light and loud sound, insecure, weak, pitiable, inconspicuous, submissive, skittish, evil Progress A requirement from the client is to create variations in the shape of the creature. Currently multiple forms are being developed which aim on reflecting characteristics and interaction of the concept. Since designer toys distinguish themselves in their quality, the focus is on high finishing of the product. Also making the toy production ready has high priority.
