What is Work-Study • It is a Financial Aid program that allows you to work while you are attending college. • This is just like any other job: You are expected to be a dependable employee. • Unlike the name may suggest, you are not allowed to “study” at work!! • You can be terminated from work-study employment if you are not fulfilling the requirements of your position.

  3. What is Work-Study, Continued • It is intended to offer a job in an area related to your major, or desired field of study. • The award is the amount of money you can earn during the academic year. • Most awards are based on working 15 hours per week-you can reduce this if you choose. • You are paid based on the number of hours actually worked per pay period.

  4. Benefits of Work-Study Employment • Arrange work around your class schedule • Convenience • Interact with campus staff and faculty • Familiarity with campus • Off-Campus Opportunities, too • Work-Study earnings excluded as income on the FAFSA • Competitive Wage—STARTING at $7.75 per hour

  5. Types of Work-Study Jobs • General Office/Clerical • Tutor • Security • Computer Assistant • Child Care • Assist with Athletic Events • Public Relations • Community Service

  6. How to Get Work-Study • Complete Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). • Apply each year by the March 15th priority application date. • Indicate on the FAFSA that you are interested in work-study. • You must demonstrate high financial need, as determined by the FAFSA.

  7. Work-Study Assignments • If you are awarded work-study, complete the online work-study questionnaire by July 15th. • Indicate the type of work you are interested and/or experienced in. • In early August, you will be notified about your assignment. • You will determine your work schedule with your supervisor.

  8. How You Get Paid • You are paid based on the number of hours you have worked during each pay period. • You are paid bi-weekly either through direct deposit into your bank account, or by check (direct deposit is preferable). • Your total earnings cannot exceed your work-study award. • Your earnings are not applied directly to University charges.

  9. Online Work-Study Questionnaire • If you have been awarded work-study for the 2006-2007 Academic Year, access the online questionnaire at: https://secure.mnsu.edu/finaid/workstudy/student Deadline to access online questionnaire is July 15th!!!
