  1. A brief overview of the CNA introducingSPR (90) required in 2011-12

  2. Good morning and Good News Take just a moment to share with the group something GOOD that is happening in your life either personally or professionally.

  3. Remember SI Process is ALL about students

  4. A Collaborative Problem Solving Approach to Student Achievement

  5. Getting Ready Collect Data Build/Analyze Profiles School Process Profile 40 or 90 School Data Profile/Analysis Summary Report Set Goals Set Measurable Objectives Research Best Practice Develop Action Plans Implement Plan Monitor Plan Evaluate Plan Repeat steps 1 - 10 One Common Voice – One PlanMichigan Continuous School ImprovementStagesand Steps Gather Study Plan Do Comprehensive Needs Assessment School Improvement Plan Collect Discuss Report

  6. Define the Problem (Gather/Study) 1 3 2 Collect (Gather) Information Discuss (Study) Results Report to AdvancED There are 3 Basic Steps to each of the major components in the CNA: School Process Rubric (SPR 40 or 90) and School Data Profile/Analysis (SDP/A)

  7. 3 Report to Starting with the “End in Mind”

  8. 3) Report in AdvancED NOTE: SPR (90) and SIP are open while the SDP/A is set to open in mid-January.

  9. 3) Report in AdvancED NOTE: Evidence from the EdYES 40 indicators will be pre-populated but not scored on rubric.

  10. 3) Report in AdvancED NOTE: Remember you must “Enter Response” on the detailed rubric.

  11. IMPROVEMENTS: You no longer need to check all the previous boxes and if implemented, content area usually disappears.

  12. 3) Report in AdvancED NOTE: New Focus Question same as Conclusion

  13. NEW Conclusion in SPR 90 • As the staff reviewed the responses to the questions asked about the key characteristics, benchmarks, standards, and strands, what trends were noticed that may impact on student achievement? • What did the staff identify as strengths in the school systems and protocols of practice that significantly impact/support student achievement in the building? • What did the staff identify as over-arching challenges that would need to be addressed? • What process did the school use to complete this School Process Rubrics (90)? 3) Report in AdvancED NOTE: Auditor focus during On Site Review (#4)

  14. 2 Discuss (Study) the data As a group, discuss a select few indicators

  15. DISCUSS Process Data • Reduce 90 to approximately 10 – 15 focused indicators by celebrating 3-5, isolating 3-5 that have been recently improved and/or identifying 3-5 challenges that need additional attention and systemic improvement. • Therefore: Select a few to celebrate and only a few to focus on improving through the School Improvement Process regardless of how you choose to complete the 90 indicators. • Key point: Focus on system issues, not isolated examples. Accreditation is not based on score, so be Brutally Honest – unlikely everyone will be implemented on the system level for every indicator.

  16. 1 Collect (Gather) Info to “Define the problem” You may choose your pathway

  17. Top Two Options for collecting information • Utilize an online Survey in order to have multiple people independently respond to some or all of the indicators. • Allows staff to complete on their own time and at their own pace • Reserves staff meeting time for discussion and collaboration rather than independent scoring • Flexible in terms of delivery to all or some

  18. Top Two Options for collecting information “Divide and Conquer” or “More hands make less work” You may wish to designate teams of teachers (dispersed across departments or grade levels) to collaborate on a subset of the indicators. If a group will simply decide for the building a subset of indicators, then a survey is redundant. Better to have the staff input directly into AdvancED or on a paper copy. Other considerations: familiar 40 versus the new 50 indicators … SPR 90 indicators p. 1 of 188

  19. Discussion

  20. School Improvement Team collaboratively scores the 50 new indicators (plus updates the 40 as needed) using the “paper version” template. SI Team chooses roughly 10-15 indicators to survey staff online and later discusses at staff meeting, focusing on celebrations, improvements and areas of challenge (or focus). Brainstorm Best Practice – 1st District

  21. Integrating technology, principals envision the entire staff providing input on the "other 50" indictors. Teachers will pair up and have the Google survey on a mini or iPad. The full rubric and suggested evidence will be laid out in stations for the staff to rotate every 2 minutes in a carousel fashion. SI Team will update the EdYES 40 and may choose to narrow the other 50 indicators for the sake of time. Brainstorm Best Practice – 2nd District

  22. “Data is powerful IF insight from educators transform the data through collaborative problem solving to create an inspiring action plan that is implemented with faith and courage. Then ask: Is what we’re doing working to improve teaching and learning? How do we know?” D. Greer
