  1. Medieval Japanese History • Kamakura period 1192-1333 • Muromachi/Ashikaga 1333-1573 • Momoyama/Azuki 1573-1600/03

  2. Kamakura Period • 1192 C.E., Minamoto Yoritomo was appointed shogun and established a new government, the Kamakura Bakufu • Minamoto died in 1199 and created a power vacuum between Kamakura and Kyoto • Emperor basically loses all power.

  3. Kamakura Period • Leading social order is samurai • Zen introduced (1191) • Heavy reliance on the military to fend off the Mongols broke the government and redistributed power • 1333, Emperor Go-Daigo restores imperial power.

  4. Muromachi Period • Emperor Go-Daigo was ousted to the south of Kyoto by 1336. • Ashikaga Takauji appointed himself shogun and established government in Muromachi district of Kyoto • Ashikaga Yoshimitsu (1368-1408) as shogun ruled during a period of bloody civil wars. • 1573, end of period
