HISTORICAL NOVEL SIR WALTER SCOTT [1771-1832] • was bornin Edinburgh • Scottish writer and poet • Greatest historical novelist • created a new literary form historical novel • Attended Edinburgh University art-law • In 1806 become clerk to the court of session • was baronet and became aSir in 1820 • died on September 21,1832

HIS WORKS • WAVERLY[1814] his first novel dealing with the rebellion of 1745 • Always publishing the novels under the name Author of Waverley • GUY MANNERING[1815] • TALES OF MY LANDLORD[1816] • THE ANTIQUARY[1816] • ROB ROY[1817] a Scottish hero • IVANHOE [1819] set in the reign of Richard I is perhaps the best known of Scott’s novel today. • used well known historical figures political and social context • told the stories of fictional characters and real people against authentic historical background • Was the first novelist to portray peasant characters sympaticly and to recognize the important role they had in history

  4. IVANHOE • set against the conflict between NORMAN and SAXONS • the presence of Jews shows cultural and ethnic diversity of Medieval Age • an example of heroes who is tolerant and fearless • presents transition between on age of heroism and reason

THE GOTHIC NOVEL • combines horror and romance • based on tales of macabre, the fantastic and supernatural • Includes terror,mystery,ghosts,haunted houses, Gothic architecture castles, death, etc. • The modern horror novel and classic Gothic work is Mary Shelley’s Frankestein is often cited as a forerunner of modern science fiction

MARY SHELLEY [1797_1851] • was born on 1797 in London • biographer & editor with her novel of Frankenstein • ran away with poet Percy Shelley • because the poet was already marry, the relation shocked society • After Percy‘s wife had committed suicide they reluctantly married&moved Italy • After her husband drowned when she was 24,returned England &devoted herself to son and her works • died in 1851

HER WORKS • best remembered with Frankenstein • In a half making nightmare Mary struck on the idea of man made monster set about writing Frankenstein • finished her work in a year 1818 • In 1823 – Valperga(a romance set in 14th century in Italy) • In 1826 - The Last Man (a vision of the end of civilisation

  8. the loss of her mother death and death of 3 children, she reflected in the themes of birth and creation in her writings • her ambivalent attitudes can see her writings Example : the monster both loving and fearful the mirrors the mixture of fascination&apprehension which is about revolution and change after the events of the French revolution

  9. THE NOVEL OF MANNERS • It is the realist novel which deals with aspecets of behaviour,language,customs • Shows a conflict between individual aspiration or desires and the accepted social codes of behaviours • Well-know examples of the novelist is Jane Austen

JANE AUSTEN • was born in Hampshire • had seven siblings-grew up in a close-knit family • Began to write in a teenage • Most of her books dedicated to her relatives or family friends • She was familiar with eighteenth century novels including the works of Richardson and Fielding • her books set amongst the English middle-upper classes • died in 1817

  11. HER WORKS • her first novel-sense and sensibility-1811 • Pride and Prejudice (first romantic-comedy in the history of the novel)-1813 • Mansfield Park-1814 • Emma-1816 • Persuasion and Northanger Abbey-1818 (published after her death)

  12. Used free indirect speech,burlesque,irony • Her plots comic highlighted the dependence of woman on marriage to secure social standing and economic security • Her works are concerned with moral issues • Her characters have strengths and weakness, they learn lessons by experiencing the life.

SENSE AND SENSIBILITY • was the first of Austen's novels to be published under thepseudonym "A Lady” in 1811 • Elinorand Marianne are the daughters of Mr. Dashwood by his second wife • After their father died,they moved a new house where they experience both romance and heartbreak • The contrast between the sisters' characters is resolved as they each find love and lasting happiness • This leads some to believe that the book's title describes how Elinor and Marianne find a balance between sense and sensibility in life and love.
