The Internet2 Commons • An effort to encourage and support large-scale, distributed collaboration for the research and education community • A vision: • enabling one-to-one, one-to-group, and group-to-group collaboration • supporting personal communications, meetings, conferences, and teaching and learning • for Internet2 members and their international counterparts

  9. A Problem to Solve • As a community we use several, mostly incompatible, video conferencing technologies • H.323 • Access Grid • VRVS (Virtual Room Videoconferencing System) • MPEG1 & 2 • DV over Firewire • HDTV

  10. Approach • Share information about recommended uses • Decision tree: room-based vs. desktop-based, video quality levels, multicast vs. unicast, … • Point people to current implementations • Facilitate development and deployment projects

  11. The Internet2 Commons H.323 Videoconferencing Service • An H.323 service built on ViDeNet architecture • Contribution of second level support by OARnet/ITEC-Ohio • Contribution of MCUs by Ohio State University, OARnet/ITEC-Ohio, CIC • Initial gateway architecture based on VRVS

Two Phases • Phase I • A “best effort” service • Site coordinator point-of-contact • Use email for support • Distributed pools of equipment (e.g., MCUs) • Training, workshops, tutorials, docs, … • Phase II • Operational production services • Measurement infrastructure • A financially sustainable service

Communication • Expanding the existing set of main contacts at each Internet2 member to ensure wider communication within member institutions and organizations. • Beginning work with existing contacts (Executive Liaisons, Applications Leads, and Network Engineering Leads) to clarify roles and provide ongoing support.

Discovery • Within the Internet2 End-to-End Performance Initiative (E2EPerf): • creating a series of "best common practice" documents • creating a distributed information system for sharing knowledge and expertise • targeting specific application and discipline communities within which specific performance issues can be addressed

Discovery • Expanding current communication with applications liaisons and applications support staff on campuses • Continuing current efforts in disciplinary areas like health science and more recently, arts and humanities, as effective mechanisms for reaching faculty and researchers.  • Building a more flexible and powerful member database that will allow for the capture and maintenance of a much richer set of information on members and on activities.  • Creating a customizable interface to Internet2 web information through "my.internet2.edu".

What’s next? • Continue to work on targeting and tagging communications so they reach the right individuals at the right times • Explore strategies for reaching faculty and applications communities, including shaping Internet2’s role in supporting this outreach • Make member review and comment on the development of major new initiatives a routine practice • Build on work underway to develop knowledgebases, best common practices, and mechanisms for discovery of collaboration opportunities • Ensure that member meeting programs include opportunities for open discussion about mission, activities, and directions • KEEP THE PROCESS GOING!
