Feminism • A transformational politic (Suzanne Pharr) • Change • Personal and societal • Oppositional • Political work that changes the hearts and minds of people • Supports personal and group growth • Is based on a vision of a society where people are supported by institutions and communities to live their best lives

  3. Feminism • “Feminism requires an expansion of the self” • Hooks- “Feminism is a movement to end sexism, sexist exploitation and oppression” • Why does Michael Kimmel use the term profeminist men? • Anti-sexism, anti-oppression

  4. Fear of Feminism • “Fear of feminism is not a fear of gender but rather a fear of politics” • Homophobia • Backlash • Postfeminism • Many see violence, discrimination etc. but are unwilling to “trace out its consequences and to understand it’s complexities”

Social Change- Two Models • Liberal- a piece of the pie • Add women and stir • Change from within- education, law, politics • Inequality is located in barriers to inclusion and advancement • Radical- a new pie • A new foundation, change from without • Transform the system • Different value, organizational, ethical structures • Women’s studies, lesbian separatists

  6. Feminist Activism • Political action- voting, running for office • Law and policy • Picketing • Art • Education • Consciousness-raising • Non-profit • Writing • What you buy, wear, eat • “Your revolution happens with big realizations and small actions”

  7. Panel on Feminist Activism • Are you a feminist? What does that mean to you? • How do you define activism? • How did you get involved in activism? • What are the joys of feminist work? The hardships? • How do you blend your personal and political lives?
