  1. Reducing Black Carbon G-7

  2. What is Black Carbon? • Black carbon or BC is formed through the incomplete combustion of fossil fuels, biofuel, and biomass, and is emitted in both anthropogenic and naturally occurring soot. • Essentially black carbon is soot pollution from villages or towns in newly developing nations such as India. • Black Carbon has become the second most prevalent greenhouse gas in out atmosphere, being responsible for 18% of the Earth’s warming. Carbon dioxide in comparison is responsible for 40%.

  3. A Quick Solution • One quick fix is to have larger, richer G-7 nations help replace primitive cooking stoves and heaters in newly developing countries with new modern eco-friendly stoves and heaters that produce far less black carbon or soot. • G-7 is needed because many people in these nations can’t pay for these appliances on their own.

  4. Why This Interests G-7 • Since soot only lasts in the atmosphere a few weeks, getting rid of black carbon could have very quick results on the heating of the atmosphere. This could give the larger G-7 nations time to enact legislation and develop technology to deal with carbon dioxide emissions.
