  6. Chronological Bible Discipleship Iva May and Dr. Stan May week twenty-nine 2Kings/Isaiah/Micah/Psalms 2Chronicles

  7. Review Creation: God reveals His goodness through creation and His mercy in response to sin. Patriarchs: God reveals His response to the faithful-ness of men (Job, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph). Exodus: God liberates Israel, and leads them to the Promised Land and shapes them into a nation holy to Himself. Conquest: Joshua, relying on God’s presence and power, leads Israel to possess and settle the Promised Land. Judges: Every man does what is right in his own eyes, and Israel falls into a cycle of disobedience, judgment, oppression and deliverance (the sin cycle). Kingdom: Israel asks for a king and God raises up a succes-sion of kings who rule over a united Israel, beginning with Saul and ending with Solomon.

  8. Divided Kingdom Era • After the death of King Solomon, the nation of Israel divides into the North-ern Kingdom (Israel) and the Southern Kingdom (Judah) • Israel is ruled by a rapid succession of kings who completely neglect the Law and lead the people into idolatry for 200 years until they are carried into captivity by the Assyrians • Judah’s kings alternate between good and evil leader-ship, resulting in a slower devolution into idolatry and their eventual judgment by Babylon about 140 after Israel’s demise

  9. Context • God raises up multiple prophets as His messen-gers to Judah in order to… • Denounce sin • Exalt His righteousness • Proclaim coming judgment • Announce the coming Messiah • Isaiah, Jeremiah and Ezekiel are the three major prophets of this period in Judah’s history

  10. Context • After a succession of 20 wicked kings, the N. Kingdom is taken into captivity by Assyria • The S. Kingdom of Judah hangs on by God’s mercy as 4 of their 19 kings submit to God’s authority • During the final year of King Uzziah’s reign (Judah’s 10th king), Isaiah sees the King of heaven on His throne

  11. Overview • Isaiah 6 records the prophet’svision of the King of Creation • He appears seated on a throne, exalted and glorified • Surrounded by angels constantly worshiping Him • He speaks with power that shakes the temple • Isaiah 53 records the prophet’s revelation of the same king in his message of hope for Israel • This King is presented in His humanity • This King is presented in His humility • This King would bring the promise of restoration for the nation of Israel • We see in today’s lesson, the High King of Heaven and the Humble King on earth

  12. Those who refuse to bow the knee to the exalted King of Creation will not acknowledge Christ in His humanity and His cross. Key Truth

  13. THE Divided Kingdom Era Isaiah 6, 7, 9, & 52-53 A Prophet Sees a King His Exaltation in Heaven His Entrance to Earth His Humility on Earth

  14. His Exaltation in Heaven Isaiah 6:1-8

  15. His Exaltation in Heaven • Isaiah’s Vision Precedes his Call to the Ministry • He sees the majesty of God (1-4) • The Lord appears as the exalted and majestic King on His throne • Isaiah hears the angels worship the LORD Almighty • “Holy, Holy, Holy, is the LORD of Hosts…” • He feels the misery of sin (5) • He comprehends his own sin and the sins of his people • “I am a man of unclean lips…” • “…and I live among a people of unclean lips…”

  16. His Exaltation in Heaven • Isaiah’s Vision Precedes his Call to the Ministry • He experiences the ministry of forgiveness (6-7) • Receives cleansing from the altar • “…your iniquity is taken away and your sin is forgiven.” • He hears the call of missions (8) • Submits himself to the King of Creation • Gladly embraces service to the King • “Here I am, send me!

  17. Discussion Looking at Isaiah’s reaction to meeting the Lord, what sort of reaction should we expect in the lives of those who encounter Christ today? Did Isaiah’s proximity to the Lord have anything to do with his comprehension of his sinful condition? Is such a response to Jesus just a one time event in the life of the believer?

  18. His Entrance to Earth Isaiah 7:14 Isaiah 9:6-7

  19. His Entrance to Earth • The Timing of Isaiah’s Prophecies • Both come during a period when the human king of David’s line is weak • Ahaz would not ask the LORD for a sign • Isaiah predicts a King whose entrance will wed majesty and meekness

  20. His Entrance to Earth • Isaiah’s Two Prophecies about the Birth of an Exalted King • The King will be born of a virgin (7:14) • God’s causing a virgin to conceive miraculously would be a sign for Israel • The King will be born with all divine authority (9:6-7) • He will not become a King, but will be born as Prince and King in David’s line • He will bear royal AND divine titles • He will rule on David’s throne forever over one kingdom • From the Time of Isaiah’s Prophecy, Israel would look for the Day of His Birth • But they did not anticipate the time of His humility

  21. Discussion What part of Isaiah’s prophecy about the coming exalted King caused the people of Israel to miss His appearance? Do people miss Jesus for the same reasons today?

  22. His Humility on Earth Isaiah 52:13 – 53:12

  23. His Humility on Earth • In the Midst of Bitter Judgment, Isaiah Offers another View of the Eternal King to Come • His complete exaltation: “He shall be exalted and extolled and be very high” (52:13) • His stunning appearance: “Just as many were astonished at you, My people, so His appearance was marred more than any man and His form more than the sons of men.” (52:14) • His lack of appeal: “He has no stately form or majesty that we should look upon Him, nor appearance that we should be attracted to Him.” (53:2) • His rejection by man: “He was despised and forsaken of men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; and like one from whom men hide their face He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.” (53:3)

  24. His Humility on Earth • In the Midst of Bitter Judgment, Isaiah Offers another View of the Eternal King to Come • His shameful assignment: The Innocent One took on the guilt of man’s sin and shame • His substitutionary suffering (53:4-6,8,10-12) • His affliction by God (53:4, 12) • His quiet submission • Embraces the path of slaughter (53:6) • Refuses to protest (53:7) • Surrenders to death itself (53:8b-9) • His resurrection from the dead: “He will see His offspring, He will prolong His days, and the good pleasure of the LORD will prosper in His hand.As a result of the anguish of His soul, will see it and be satisfied.” (53:10b-11a)

  25. Discussion How does the Gospel of Christ differ from all the other world religions and their messages?

  26. Conclusions • A heavenly King in His heavenly kingdom reigns unseen by those bound by natural sight. • One cannot remain the same after encount-eringthe King, as confession of sin and sur-render of life naturally follow that con-frontation. • The glory of the Gospel is its suffering and substitution. • The Gospel DOES NOT offer new rules, but rather gives freedom from sin’s penalty and power over sin’s hold in our lives.

  27. Bible TRIViA QUIZ The Books of 2 Kings & Isaiah(2pts) • When Hezekiah was purging the land of idols, he also destroyed what image made by Moses? • “He removed the high places and broke down the sacred pillars and cut down the Asherah. He also broke in pieces the bronze serpent that Moses had made...” (2 Kings 18:4) • God uses the distance between what two realms to illustrate the superiority of His ways and His thoughts? • “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways,” declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts.” (Isaiah 55:8-9) • What did Isaiah compare the righteous acts of men to? • “For all of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a filthy garment.” (Isaiah 64:6)

  28. BONUS ROUND Bonus Questions(4pts) • What name did the people give to the ser-pent image created by Moses? • “…for until those days the sons of Israel burned incense to it; and it was called Nehushtan.” (2 Kings 18:4) • “…and you, O Israelites, will be gathered up on by one. And in that day a great trum-pet will sound. Those who are perishing in _____ and those who were exiled in _____ will come and worship the LORD on the holy mountain in Jerusalem.” • “Those who are perishing in Assyria and those who were exiled in Egypt will come and worship the LORD...” (Isaiah 27:13)
