  2. Romans 12:10-21What IS a Transformed Life? “Maybe someday Christians can all learn to live Romans twelve.” - Robert Whiteside The Gospel According to Paul

  3. “ROMANS” is a letter written to the churches of Christ in Rome • Hadn’t been visited by an apostle • Made up of Jews and Gentiles • Holy Spirit spoke to both sides • Spoke of salvation that comes only by faith • Spoke of struggles to do right • Spoke of God’s purpose seen in His choice • And exhorted Christians to be different, transformed HOW TO BE TRANSFORMED? Think with sound judgment / not too highly of self Recognize our relationship to the body Exercise ourselves for the body

  4. Not just actions, but attitudes should be different Romans 12:10 Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; give preference to one another in honor (NASV) Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. (ESV) Galatians 6:10 So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith. There IS a double standard… • devoted in brotherly love, in the original, indicated a family tie • preferring, literally means going before, taking the lead, setting the example…

  5. These 3 refer to the outward life of the Christian Romans 12:11 not lagging behind in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord; (NASV) Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. (ESV) • In diligence – not lagging, lazy slothful, a procrastinator • Fervent- effervescent, seething boiling • Knowing that this/all work is for the Lord

  6. V. 12 is an inward manifestation toward God Romans 12:12 rejoicing in hope, persevering in tribulation, devoted to prayer, (NASV) Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. (ESV) • Rejoicing and hope are tied together • Persevering in tribulation, not fading or shrinking back • Devoted to entreaty, petition

  7. Responding to others properly • Contributing to… literally, to partner in the needs of saints • Practicing… literally to pursue, to be aggressively hospitable • Blessing x 2 shows the difficulty of this transformation Romans 12:13-14 contributing to the needs of the saints, practicing hospitality. 14. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them (ESV)

  8. Exhibit Empathy Romans 12:15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep(ESV) • Sympathy- to feel FOR another • Empathy- to feel WITH another John 11:33-38 When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in his spirit and greatly troubled. 34 And he said, “Where have you laid him?” They said to him, “Lord, come and see.” 35 Jesus wept. 36 So the Jews said, “See how he loved him!”37 But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man also have kept this man from dying?” 38 Then Jesus, deeply moved again, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay against it.

  9. Exhibit impartiality and peace Romans 12:16-18 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight. 17 Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. 18 If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.  (ESV) Acts 17:26 And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place,

  10. James 2:1-5 My brothers, show no partiality as you hold the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory. 2 For if a man wearing a gold ring and fine clothing comes into your assembly, and a poor man in shabby clothing also comes in, 3 and if you pay attention to the one who wears the fine clothing and say, “You sit here in a good place,” while you say to the poor man, “You stand over there,” or, “Sit down at my feet,” 4 have you not then made distinctions among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts? 5 Listen, my beloved brothers, has not God chosen those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom, which he has promised to those who love him?

  11. Exercise power over evil Romans 12:19-21 Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” 20 To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.(ESV) • Use self-control • grow stronger • mature • defeat evil

  12. Tough goals, but worthy. Have we given heed? The Holy Spirit meant “transformed” when He said it. Change, be different, shift gears, become another person.

  13. “Transforming” is done step by step beginning…. • With hearing and believing, John 4:24 • Repenting, or turning, Luke 12:2, Acts 2:38 • And being baptized, Acts 22:26
