It is not generally “fair”.

  2. Look For… Current Events Common Symbols Exaggerations & Distortions Caricatures / Stereotypes Allusions to Literature or History Labels / Captions Irony / Sarcasm

  3. Sometimes we can get the general idea even if we don’t have all of the information or background knowledge the creator expects.

  4. Historical Cartoons often present even greater challenges because of changing styles and what contemporaneous readers were expected to know or recognize.

  5. We should start with what we CAN understand or recognize, ask targeted, useful questions about the rest, and build on what we DO know with logical inferences. We do NOT just decide it’s “too hard” and give up.

  6. What Common Elements DO we recognize or understand with confidence?

What drives people to see themselves so strongly in terms of ‘us’ and ‘them’?
