  1. Vancouver's Web GIS Experience: An Update and Lessons Learned Jonathan Mark Manager, GIS and Topobase Support City of Vancouver On Behalf of the GIS and Topobase Support Team GeoTec Conference, September 29 2011 The New Geospatial Enterprise: Integrating Government, Industry and Research

  2. GIS at the City of Vancouver GIS approach Web GIS early years (1999 to 2008) Web GIS recent years (2009 to 2011) Lessons learned Plans for the future The New Geospatial Enterprise: Integrating Government, Industry and Research

  3. General Approach to GIS 1980s—departmental mapping system Early 1990s—began move to enterprise GIS Oracle Spatial reinforced enterprise approach Oracle at the centre of the data word We are consolidating both staff and applications We are migrating to newer product releases The New Geospatial Enterprise: Integrating Government, Industry and Research

  4. GIS Environment VanMap (MapGuide) ENGIS Web phasing out (MapGuide) Topobase replacing pure Map 3D Mobile (still looking at this) Oracle Spatial enterprise database MapInfo Other Infrastructure Management The New Geospatial Enterprise: Integrating Government, Industry and Research

  5. Staff VanMap introduced in 1999 Public VanMap introduced in 2001 Primary focus early on was Do something with web GIS Make data available 1st staff release had 20-30 layers (now about 425) Do a public version with fewer layers Used early versions of MapGuide Web GIS: The Early Years The New Geospatial Enterprise: Integrating Government, Industry and Research

  6. Primary focus began to shift Added more business functionality, e.g. Thematic Mapping & Custom Mapping Query Builder View Cones Cemetery Did usability studies for staff & public versions More structured methodology for doing things But still Added more layers Migrated to new technology versions The Middle Years The New Geospatial Enterprise: Integrating Government, Industry and Research

  7. Lots more layers Lots more functionality More integration (3-1-1, Tempest, SAP, Google Street View, Pictometry viewer) Single purpose VanMap versions Migration to new version (MGE) Implemented Google-like look & feel Supporting Open Data Acknowledging Google & Bing exist  The Recent Years The New Geospatial Enterprise: Integrating Government, Industry and Research

  8. Host City site brought a series of new challenges in regard to Requirements Technology Host City VanMap: A Turning Point The New Geospatial Enterprise: Integrating Government, Industry and Research

  9. Familiar interface (like Google) Easy to use (like Google) No trip planning (even though Google has it) Limited layers Limited functionality (like Google) Single focus maps (bikes, closures, etc.) Hidden legend Embedded in Host City HTML pages Host City Mapping Requirements The New Geospatial Enterprise: Integrating Government, Industry and Research

  10. Requirements Concurrent usage (100-150 & performance) Requirements evolved with lots of changes Requirements documentation never formalized Interface requirements were high level Data Data providers had different priorities Applications & data created by different groups Technology Couldn’t use the more familiar version of MapGuide Key Challenges for Host City VanMap The New Geospatial Enterprise: Integrating Government, Industry and Research

  11. Host City VanMap Maps • Olympic Road Network • Olympic Lane Network • Pedestrian Corridors • Bike Routes • Civic Theatres • Public Art • Truck Routes • Venue Area Road Closures • Parking Restrictions • Paralympics Transportation Plan The New Geospatial Enterprise: Integrating Government, Industry and Research

  12. Host City VanMap Usage • Peak usage per day • 7,700 visits • Peak usage per week • 29,000 visits • Usage peaked the week prior to Games • Site performed very well • Overall site had many more visitors The New Geospatial Enterprise: Integrating Government, Industry and Research

  13. Host City http://gisweb90.vancouver.ca/hostcitymaps_demo/ http://gisweb12.vancouver.ca/hostcitymaps_demo/ Host City Web Site (sort of) The New Geospatial Enterprise: Integrating Government, Industry and Research

  14. Host City Reinforced an Evolution • Single purpose VanMap versions The New Geospatial Enterprise: Integrating Government, Industry and Research

  15. Road Ahead Elections 2011 Electric Car Charging Motorcycle Parking Disability Parking Street Vendors Drinking Fountains Public Art Green Building Audio Tours Snow Removal Routes Single purpose VanMap examples Single Purpose VanMap The New Geospatial Enterprise: Integrating Government, Industry and Research

  16. MGE Public VanMap • Started with public VanMap as it is easier • A much larger challenge than single purpose, but used single purpose experience • Running on new 64 bit version • Reaction has been overwhelmingly positive The New Geospatial Enterprise: Integrating Government, Industry and Research

  17. Lessons Learned (or just reminders) In the as always department • Understand user requirements • Document user requirements • Use new technology for high profile projects with care • Build in contingency in regard to timing and capacity • Not different than other project management needs • Know your technology (what a surprise!) And in the GIS area • Enterprise GIS pays off but it is work • GIS is “just” another enabling technology The New Geospatial Enterprise: Integrating Government, Industry and Research

  18. Futures Basics • Migrate staff VanMap to MGE 201X • Increase data and functionality • Develop more single purpose versions as requested • Further integration with other City initiatives Possible Enhancements • Consider adding routing functionality (to Google or not) • Consider changes to increase ease of use • Consider changes to reflect different personas • Support mobile access The New Geospatial Enterprise: Integrating Government, Industry and Research
