  2. Building and maintaining relationships with employers is more important than ever. The following ideas and suggestions are designed to help open doors and pave the way for new employer contact and relationship opportunities.

  3. The employer is more than a feeding ground for jobs. • Call To Action • Ice Breaker • Staying Connected • Resume Partner • Guest Speakers • Become A Resource Relationship Keys

  4. Try to always ask questions that do not require a yes or no answer. Instead of saying, “Do you have any openings?” Ask, “What positions do you generally hire for?” (Even if you know the answer. Get them talking. Get them connected.) • Have a short list of what you want from the call. Call to action…..back to basics

  5. Always have a call to action. Set up an appointment to meet, email follow-up, or a time in the future to check back for example. • Ask for a referral. Do they know anyone in the field who is looking for qualified applicants. Call to action continue….

  6. Build profiles of potential employers. Some suggested points are: • I am interested in serving on the Advisory Board(s) • I am interested in attending your Free Annual Career Fairs • My Company offers tuition re-imbursement • My Company is interested in learning more about professional development opportunities for staff and employees • I anticipate my hiring needs to be ________ Ice breaker

  7. Sample Tools Ice-breaker Tip: What one piece of information on this form is “gold” for you and your Advisors? • “What’s in your folder?” • Info Form • Fliers about programs • RESUMES • Your business card

  8. Schedule continued follow-up by sending something on a regular basis to stay in touch (newsletter, article, email, invite, etc…). • Send a thank you note after a graduate is hired. Staying connected

  9. Ask employers to critique a couple of your graduates resumes. Find out what they want to see. The feedback may surprise you. Resume partner

Networking – A Few Effective Ideas… • Advertise ways to post openings • Give-a-Ways: Gifts that keep on giving…logoed items…candy (“Theme” your gifts to make them work for you!) • Announce all events and activities in Chamber listings • Put announcements in the local listings and “people” sections of the newspapers • Post on your schools Facebook page • Announce upcoming graduation classes looking for positions Employers and you

Professional Workshops at your Career Fairs March 25th, Morrison University Professional Workshops 1:30 – 2:20 “Your Resume Doctor is In!” In this hands-on workshop, HR experts Nedra Daugherty of Harrah’s and Lynda Murdock of Workforce Readiness, will share tips on what makes a strong, memorable resume and how to build one, including turning duties and responsibilities into accomplishments. 2:30 – 3:20 “The Human Detective – What Our Body Language Really reveals!” Professor Ray Ritch will share the secrets of what our body language reveals about us, how to tell when someone is lying, and some less common characteristics that we may unknowingly reveal to others. 3:30 – 4:20 “Making ‘Cents’ of Financial Matters!” Kent Bailey of New York Life and Latonya Glover of Wells Fargo team up to help you wade through a sea of terms and definitions in both financial works to help you more fully understand how they specifically apply to you. Kent will specifically address: “Tax Diversifying your Retirement Income” along with “Why you can’t retire on your 401(k) alone”.
