  4. PROBLEM SCOPE The issue to be resolved is the bicycle routetraveling South on Commercial St… PROBLEM AREA IS… BICYCLES ARE BEING FORCED TO CROSS 2 LANES OF VEHICLE TRAFFIC IN ORDER TO CONTINUE SOUTH ON COMMERCIAL STREET.

PROPOSED SOLUTIONS SEVERAL SOLUTIONS HAVE BEEN PROPOSED… OUR GROUP WAS ASSIGNED TO ASSESS THE FOLLOWING… PROPOSAL 1A – STRIPING APPROACH (SEPARATED LANE) PROPOSAL 1B – STRIPING APPROACH (REDUCED LANE) PROPOSAL 7 – DUAL SHARROW APPROACH PROPOSAL 2 – VISTA APPROACH (RE-ROUTE THE BICYCLE LANE) PROPOSAL 6 – BIKE BOX APPROACH

PROPOSAL 1A- SEPARATED LANE • CREATES A BICYCLE LANE BETWEEN SB COMMERCIAL AND SB LIBERTY AT ALICE • AVG COST OF RE-STRIPING: $1.35/FT (INCLUDES REMOVAL AND RE-STRIPING) • THIS OPTION GARNERED LITTLE POLITICAL WILL FOR IMPLIMENTATION DUE TO UNWANTED LANE REDUCTION AS ROADS ARE CURRENTLY AT CAPACITY.

PROPOSAL 1B- REDUCED LANE • CREATES A BICYCLE LANE THROUGH SB COMMERCIAL AT LIBERTY SPLIT AND REDUCES ONE LANE OF CAPACITY • AVG COST OF RE-STRIPING: $1.35/FT (INCLUDES REMOVAL AND RE-STRIPING) • THIS OPTION GARNERED LITTLE POLITICAL WILL FOR IMPLIMENTATION DUE TO UNWANTED LANE REDUCTION AS ROADS ARE CURRENTLY AT CAPACITY.

  8. PROPOSAL 7 – DUAL SHARROW • CREATES SHARED VEHICLE – BICYCLE LANES • UNSAFE RIGHT TURN LANE CROSSING THROUGH CENTER BIKE LANE

  9. PROPOSAL 2 – VISTA APPROACH • ROUTES BICYCLES ONTO SB LIBERTY • BICYCLES USE VISTA TO RETURN TO SB COMMERCIAL • ANALYZED USING VISSIM AND SYNCHRO

  10. RESULTS - VISTA APPROACH • AVERAGE TRAFFIC DELAY OF 90.3 SECONDS INCLUDING BICYCLISTS • 95 %CI = 83 TO 97.5 SECONDS • ROUTE CREATES A REDUCTION IN BICYCLE - VEHICLE CONFLICT

  11. PROPOSAL 6 – BIKE BOX APPROACH • PLACES BICYCLES IN FRONT OF SB VEHICLE TRAFFIC AT THE INTERSECTION OF ALICE AND COMMERCIAL • MOST EFFECTIVE WHEN BICYCLES ARRIVE AT RED LIGHT • MODELED IN VISSIM

  12. RESULTS – BIKE BOX APPROACH • AVERAGE TRAFFIC DELAY 99 SECONDS INCLUDING BYCYCLES • 95% CI = 91.3-106.5 SECONDS • ASSUMED 15 CYCLIST PER HOUR

RECOMMENDATIONS USING THE BIKE BOX APPROACH BIKE BOX APPROACH IS MOST APPROPRIATE SOLUTION TO REALISTIC BICYCLE BEHAVIOR AND ECONOMICAL FEASIBILITY GREEN BOX HIGHLIGHTS THE PRESENCE OF BICYCLISTS IN THE INTERSECTION OF ALICE AND COMMERCIAL BICYCLES MAY WAIT FOR A RED LIGHT TO ALLOW A HEAD START FOR MORE SECURITY ADDING A LOOP DETECTOR WITH A BIKE ONLY GREEN CAN GIVE BICYCLES A HEAD START TO CLEAR INTERSECTION
