  2. What did John Howard write? • His report into the state of prisons in England.

  3. When was it published? • 1777

  4. Who campaigned to have women prisoners’ conditions improved? • Elizabeth Fry

  5. What were the Bow Street Runners? • The fore-runners of the police force, based in the Bow Street Magistrates court. The Fieldings were the magistrates.

  6. What were the Luddites protesting about? • Machines taking their jobs.

  7. What were the Chartists protesting about? • They wanted electoral reform, including suffrage for all men, payment for M.P.s etc.

  8. Name a Suffragette. • You could have Emmeline Pankhurst, Christabel Pankhurst, Emily Davison …

  9. What was the ‘Cat & Mouse Act’ about? • It was the one which allowed Suffragettes on hunger strike to be released if they were likely to die, but be re-arrested once they were in better health.

  10. How were the Suffragettes different to the suffragists? • The suffragists used peaceful campaign tactics; the Suffragettes were prepared to use more violent methods such as arson, smashing windows, etc.

  11. What tactics did the Dockers use to make their strike successful? • They were careful to get public support, (their only means of getting money to keep the strike going), and they worked closely with the police so they did not break up the strike as the dock owners had hoped would happen.
