  4. How My Mother Came To America

  5. It was hard for my mother, Vilma, to grow up in the Philippines. The country was separated into provinces and my mother lived in the province of Davao Del Sur. The only thing people looked forward to in a province like that was to toil on the until they died. Like the rest of her kin, Vilma farmed on a large plot of land owned by her mother Nanay. The work they did on the farm was intense. She would have to feed all of the farm animals and plant seeds on more than one acres of land before sundown. Her family would farm 365 days of the year to barely get enough food to feed her large family. Vilma would for the majority of her childhood until she was accepted into a school in Manila. This was a break from the drudgery on the farm, but the school was five miles away. Going to the school was quite the challenge because their only mode of transportation was walking. Vilma would have to wake up at five o’clock every workday in order to get to school 30 minutes early. It was difficult, but she eventually graduated high school and college with some knowledge of basic English. Now educated, Vilma worked as a police woman, radio personality, and journalist in order to save enough money to travel to America. It was with the journalist job that she finally listed an ad in American newspaper My dad, Richard, saw the ad and agreed to help her bring her to America. They decided that the only way to bring her to America was through marriage, so they married in the Philippines and boarded a plane to America. When they arrived, Vilma fell in love with Richard and wanted to make the marriage official. They became married once again, and during the honeymoon they conceived me, Apollo Day. Now living in America and wanting the best for her family in the Philippines, she sends money to them every month hoping that they would follow her lead.

  6. Busque Para América

  8. Weekend Wagers

  9. My grandmother, Verdie, and grandfather, Willie, were frequent gamblers. Gambling was banned in the 1940’s, so they had to play games at various houses in the neighborhood. During their late-night games, they would play poker. It didn’t matter to them if they lost or won. To them, it was all about the game. This attitude was detrimental to their winnings, as they would typically lose by the end of the night. They would gamble on almost every weekend, cutting a chunk of money from the pay checks they just cashed that week. This was a blow to their finances. They couldn’t afford to pay their taxes and mortgage which eventually caused them to gain the burden of a debt. With all the illegal activity, you can be sure that the police raided their games on quite a few occasions. During those most of those raids, the police caught everyone except for Verdie. This was because she used various techniques in order to escape. She would act as if she were crazy or pretend she was pregnant. Most of the time, the police would let her go because they couldn’t deal with her theatrics in the small police car. One time, Willie and Verdie went to go gambling together at a house that the police raided constantly (One would think they would chose somewhere else to gamble!). Verdie was on a streak while Willie was not doing so well. This went on for quite some time until one of the guys she beat got angry and called the police. The police came and arrested everyone except for Verdie. She evaded arrest by acting as if she needed to use the restroom (She told the officer that she needed to use the restroom or else he would have to deal with a “smelly mess” in the backseat of the squad car). The naive officer let her use the restroom without investigating it first. If the officer would have checked the restroom beforehand, he would have known that the restroom had a large window. Verdie then escaped through the window and ran home. Even after that, Verdie and Willie had a couple of more close calls with the law. Still, they continued to gamble. It seemed as if they weren’t going to stop gambling until the effects of old age caught up to them. They just couldn't handle the smoking, drinking, and sleepless lifestyle associated with gambling, and they quit in the 1990s.

  10. Verdie gambled because she didn’t have a lot of money growing up, and when she moved from Arkansas to San Diego she was introduced to gambling by Willie. Verdie then saw gambling as a way to make money fast without any drawbacks. At first, she wanted the money to help herself, however she became a problem gambler and ended up causing more harm by betting the money she just earned. She even left my dad in a car when he was only nine years old for one night during one of her games.

  11. El Fin De Semana Apuesta
