  11. 2006 WINNERS DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM CATEGORY 1-10 – Village of Oxford PD In response to numerous citizen complaints about unsafe operation of commercial motor vehicles throughout the downtown area, an enforcement response that included a zero tolerance policy for serious violations was initiated. Violations targeted included speed, disregarding traffic signals, and driving on restricted routes. Oxford partnered with the Oakland County Sheriff’s Department for training. After several months of enforcement the number of violations have declined significantly. Due to the success of this initiative, Oxford Police Department is planning to establish a Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit with written policies and specific objectives.

  12. 2006 WINNERS – DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM CONTINUED: CATEGORY 11-35 – Center Line Public Safety Dept. Problem identified involved commercial vehicles being operated at a high rate of speed, overweight and with improper load securement along Sherwood Avenue in the city. In response, special training in commercial vehicle enforcement was provided to officers, portable scales were deployed, and additional patrol time was directed to the problem area. The result was that initially the number of citations written increased significantly. The long term result was a decrease in the number of violations occurring along Sherwood Avenue.

  13. 2006 WINNERS – DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM CONTINUED: CATEGORY 36+ - Dearborn PD Dearborn Police Department has an established commercial vehicle enforcement program that utilized four full-time, CVSA certified officers. Dearborn Police Department is perhaps the only municipal law enforcement agency in Michigan that actively participates in the annual CVSA, three day enforcement and education blitz called Roadcheck. Dearborn Police Department has also demonstrated leadership in commercial motor vehicle criminal interdiction, having sponsored a three day criminal interdiction seminar in June 2006 that was attended by 151 law enfocement

  14. CATEGORY 36+ - Dearborn Police Department Continued: Officers from 27 agencies throughout Michigan and Canada. In 2006, Dearborn Police Department responded to a specific problem that involved trucks being operated in an illegal and unsafe manner in the Southfield Freeway construction zone. As a result of this cooperative enforcement effort, truck speeds were reduced significantly and the number of citizen’s complaints were also reduced.

  15. 2006 WINNERS – DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM CONTINUED: CATEGORY – SHERIFF – Wayne County Sheriff’s Office The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office has an established proactive commercial motor vehicle enforcement unit. This unit utilizes officers who are certified in the CVSA North American Standard Inspection Criteria. During 2006, the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office identified increased incidents of overweight trucks, many operating with improper load securement. An effort was mounted to address this serious safety and economic problem. As a result of this effort, the number of overweight trucks and the number of

  16. CATEGORY – Sheriff – Wayne County Sheriff’s Office Continued: vehicles damaged as a result of improper load securement both decreased. The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office has also been proactively involved in providing commercial motor vehicle enforcement at our nations busiest international border crossing for trucks, the Ambassador Bridge in Detroit.

  17. 2006 WINNERS – DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM CONTINUED: CATEGORY – MSP POSTS – METRO SOUTH POST Troopers at the Metro South Post teamed up with motor carrier officers to mount an aggressive enforcement campaign that targeted commercial vehicle speed, lane use, and equipment violation on certain highways in southern and western Wayne County. This cooperative effort included a public education component. 245 vehicle stops resulted in 236 citations. Metro South Post continues to make commercial motor vehicle enforcement and education a priority.
