  1. STEAM – Science, technology, engineering, art, and Math Blue Heron School

  2. Why STEM? • Scientific Literacy • …the ability to use scientific knowledge and processes to understand the natural world and participate in decisions… • Technological Literacy • …the ability to use, manage, understand, and assess technology…to satisfy perceived human needs and wants… • Engineering Literacy • …the understanding of how technologies are developed via the engineering design process…and is characterized by the systematic and creative application of scientific and mathematic principles to practical ends (e.g., solve problems)… • Math Literacy • …the ability to analyze, reason, and communicate ideas effectively as they pose, formulate, solve, and interpret solutions to mathematical problems in a variety of situations…

  3. STEM literacy BRIDGES the four areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics… • Innovation America: Building a Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Agenda, National Governors Association (JCE edit)18

  4. Why STEAM? • At Blue Heron, we emphasize creative thinking, the design process, innovation, and aesthetics in design and presentation. • These are shared habits of mind in the Fine Arts and are aligned with the mission of the Port Townsend School District. • STEM + ART = STEAM!

  5. Steam CONNECTS Required learning CONTENT AND SKILLS • Common Core in Math • Common Core in English Language Arts • Communication • Presentation • Critical Thinking • Non-fiction and Technical Reading and Writing • Next Generation Science Standards • Engineering and Design strand • Decision-making, citizenship, problem-solving, planning futures

  6. Stem Distinguishing Features • Rigor • Deeper Understanding & Application • Relevance • Linking Academic Learning to the World Beyond the Classroom – the So What? • Workforce Development • 21st Century Careers & Skills - Family Wage Jobs • Business/Community/School Engagement • Aligning Purposes, Policies, Programs, Practices & Partnerships for Results

  7. Stem is inquiry and problem solving:Agriculture

  8. Stem is design create a better cell phone or App?

  9. Design for function and style

  10. Design games and amusements

  11. Design in music anddance

  12. Technical theater create reality or fantasy !

  13. Stem makes recreation better!

  14. Stem Improves learning and social environments!

  15. Steam in Port Townsend! MARKETECH International, Inc.

  16. Blue heron stem curriculum • Project Lead the Way • National STEM curriculum http://www.pltw.org/ • Gateway to Technology – middle school program • 2 Foundation Courses – • Design and Modeling • Automation and Robotics • Modules – offered as one-semester courses • Integrated with 6th grade Visual Arts – all students • Elective choice for 7th and 8th graders this year.

  17. Current course opportunities: • Design and Modeling • Students use an engineering notebook to document and capture their ideas. They are introduced to and use the design process to solve problems and understand the influence that creative and innovative design has on our lives. Students use industry standard 3D modeling software to create a virtual image of their designs and produce a portfolio to showcase their creative solutions. • Automation and Robotics • Students trace the history, development, and influence of automation and robotics. They learn about mechanical systems, energy transfer, machine automation and computer control systems. Students use a robust robotics platform to design, build and program a solution to solve an existing problem.

  18. 6th grade – visual arts & Design/modeling ALL 6th graders are enrolled

  19. 6th Grade Visual Arts &Design and Modeling Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Mathematics

  20. Units of Study • Introduction to “STEAM” • What Do Engineers Do? • Introduction to the Engineer’s Notebook • History of Measurement • Standard and Metric Measurement • 2-Dimensional to 3-Dimensional Shapes • The Design Process • Art and Design Project-The Land Yacht • Introduction to Autodesk Inventor Software

  21. The “Land Yacht” Students designed a “land yacht” out of cardboard, wood, beads, and paper. We defined the problem, discussed criteria and constraints of the problem, brainstormed, sketched, then constructed a vehicle with a sail and a balloon for propulsion.

  22. Artist Research - Sail Design The students also researched an artist of choice for “inspiration” for a sail design, wrote a paper on the artist and presented their work to their peers.

  23. Refining our Land Yachts. Sharing our Sail Designs.

  24. Perseverance and FUN Students tested their vehicles outside with a partner and then refined any details needed for a better ride!

  25. Artists & Engineers

  26. Introduction to Engineering Software Autodesk Inventor • Lastly, we take all of the measurements of the parts of the land yacht and introduce the Autodesk Inventor software. • This allows students to create and assemble the parts of this project with the CAD software.

  27. 7th and 8th grade Design & Modeling Elective ~ 32 students enrolled

  28. Design & Modeling Objectives 7th/8th Grade Maintain an engineering notebook with ideas, sketches, and group process notes. Learn about the design process used by engineers and follow the process for design projects. Explore the Autodesk Inventor CAD program. Develop customary and metric measurement skills.

  29. Overview of Projects/Units • during one-semester course:
