  5. Respond to the following quote:
  6. Serial Killer: The basics FBI Special Agent Robert Ressler accredited to coining term “Serial Killer”. Comes from “crime in series” “The killing of those who do one murder, then another and another in a fairly repetitive way” FBI Official Definition of a serial killer: “Three or more separate events in three or more separate locations with an emotional cooling-off periods between homicides” Question: Can one who murders 2 people be considered a serial murderer?
  7. FBI Definition stresses 3 elements… QUANTITY: Are there at least three murders? PLACE: Did the murders occur at different locations? TIME: Did the murderer undergo a cooling-off period? What is a cooling-off period? - An interval between the murders that can last anywhere from several hours to several years
  8. What’s wrong with the FBI definition? It’s too broad Almost all serial murderers are driven by sexual desires or fantasies “I wanted to cut her body so she would not look like a person and destroy her so she would not exist. I began to cut on her body. I remember cutting her breasts off. After this, all I remember is just cutting her body.”
  9. AIM: What makes a Serial Killer? DO NOW: Please read article: “What Makes A Serial Killer” On the back of the page, in your own words, define the term “Serial killer”
  10. Introduction into Serial Killer Unit How do we get into the mind of a serial killer? Serial Killer: Individual who murders 3+ victims one at a time in a specific time interval Detecting a Serial Killer: Modus Operandi is similar
  11. Mass, Spree and Serial Murder: What’s the difference?
  12. Questions to try- Mass, Spree or Serial?? Three boys are found mutilated in a wooded area. MASS 2) A boy was found strangled to death in his bedroom, two weeks later another boy about the same age was found strangled to death in his bedroom. The case went unsolved… Four years later it happened again and the perp was caught. SERIAL 3) A young girl was found murdered in her bedroom, the next day an old lady was strangled at the park, the next day a man was shot in a parking lot, it was all done by the same perp. SPREE
  13. Serial Killers Blend In with Society…
  14. AIM: What are the different types of Serial Killers? DO NOW: What is one childhood characteristic of a serial killer?
  15. Serial Killer Checklist:
  16. 1) Visionary Psychotic Make up about 1% of killer population EXAMPLE: David Berkowitz Lie (Neighbor’s black dog told him to kill) Harvey Carignan (Was told by God to kill women)
  17. 2) Missionary They kill to “clean up” the world Believed they killed for a purpose EXAMPLE: Joseph Franklin (Killed Interracial couples) What was the hate Missionary group in history? KKK
  18. 3) Hedonists: Kill for profit or for fun Lust Killers (Killing for sexual gratification) - Dangerous fantasies become a reality. - EX: Jeffrey Dahmer (Dreamed of homosexual necrophilia) Thrill Killers (“Kill for the thrill”) - The “unthinkable” crimes - EX: Brenda Spencer (School shooting: Says her reason for killing was because she “didn’t like Monday’s”) Gain Killers (Kill in order to gain something) - Black Widow: (Kill lover/partner for financial gain) - Cost Cutter: (Kill to save money ie: kill someone you owe money to). - Lethal Caregiver: (Kill patient for financial gain ie: Dr. Shipman killed elderly patients and put himself in their will.)
  19. 4) Power Seekers Kill in order to feel power over victim. EXAMPLE: Te Bundy (Killed and Raped Women)
  20. 5) Revenge Killers Kill as a means of revenge Example: Martha Wise (Killed family members who opposed her marriage).
  21. Which type of killer? Jimmy had dangerous daydreams filled with rape and murder, he acted upon those fantasies. John liked killing women, he said it makes him feel more masculine. Jenny thought that the Mormon religion was a cult so she killed any Mormon she came into contact with. Sheldon says he got messages from the devil telling him to kill. David was very popular in school, one day he decided it would be funny to trip Carlos in the hallway, Carlos fell straight on his face and broke his nose, the embarrassment was so intense that he decided he was going to kill David because he was so upset.
  22. AIM: What is the “Insanity Plea”? DO NOW: Define in your own words “Insanity”
  23. Early definitions of Legal Insanity “Idiots, Lunatics, and Children below a certain age ought not to be held criminally responsible because they could not distinguish good from evil, right from wrong, and were this blameless in the eyes of G-d and man” --- Ancient Hebrew Law “If a criminal is senile, a child, or is proven insane, he should be held no more than the payment of civil damage” --- Plato’s Laws “Madness is its own sole punishment” --- Marcus Aurelius “If I wrong someone when not myself, then Hamlet does it not, Hamlet denies it. Who does it then? His madness.” --- Shakespeare’s Hamlet
  24. Not Guilty By Reason Of Insanity (NGRI) 1278: Hugh de Misyn (First ever NGRI) - Killed his daughter - King Edward: “Hugh hanged his daughter whilst suffering from madness, and not by felony or of malice aforethought”
  25. McNaughton Rule (1843) To establish a defense on the grounds of insanity, it must be clearly proven that, at the time of committing the act, the partly accused was labouring under such a defect of reason, from disease of the mind, as not to know the nature and quality of the act he was doing; or if he did know it, that he did not know what he was doing was wrong…
  26. THE FOUR COMPONENTS IN A LEGALLY INSANE PERSON: Mental Disorder Did not know what they were doing Did not know what they were doing WAS WRONG Could not stop their behavior
  27. Legal Definition: Mental illness of such severity that one cannot distinguish fantasy from reality***
  28. NGRI? Over a 3 year period, Shelley Krebs killed five tourists who threw trash into the ocean. She thought it was her job to protect the ocean and it’s inhabitants. She was finally caught and pleaded NGRI. Do you think she is? Marc Cawley killed his wife and three children, he told the police that a voice kept telling him to kill his family, the distress caused by this mysterious voice became so great that Cawley finally did it. He pleaded NGRI when caught. Do you think he is?
  29. A Time to Kill: Debate SCENARIO: Carl Lee Hailey’s 9 year old daughter Tonya has been raped, beaten and defiled. Her rape was so awful that she can never have children, the rape and attempted murder was done by two drunken southern white men. Carl Lee and Tonya are African American. Carl Lee decides to take justice into his own hands… He kills the two defendants (overkill)
  30. Aim: Is Carl Lee Hailey NGRI according to our class?
  31. THE JURY HAS REACHED A VERDICT!
