  2. Bell ringer • What are some questions that our pre-schoolers ask that have to do with culture?

  3. What is social Studies?

  4. Social Studies • Includes many subjects that help children learn about themselves, families, peers and people.

  5. How do you think children learn about social studies best?

  6. Learning social studies • Exploring their neighborhood • Role paying (doctors, hair dressers, etc.) • Eating ethnic food • Hearing stories about their community • Having responsibilities in class (watering plants, etc)

  7. Why should children learn about social studies? • Develop self respect and self concept • Develop respect for others • Develop ways to relate to others • Learn about the roles that people have in lives

  8. Determine the child’s interests and abilities • Observe them during play • -note the type of materials that they play with • Ask them casual questions that will help gage their interests • Ask parents to share children’s interests with you • The interests, skills, and abilities should guide the types of activities you include

  9. Developing the curriculum • Use themes • -What are some social studies themes that we have seen/will see? • Community member speakers

  10. Incidental learning • Learning that will happen during the course of a normal day • Classroom repairs • Roles of different people in school • Handling an argument • Local community happenings

  13. Multicultural concepts • Children’s attitudes towards culture begin to form in pre-school • Goals to attain include: • Respect and acceptance of child’s own culture and others • The ability to interact positively with different people

  14. Selecting and preparing materials • Diverse • Try not to omit any races

  15. Lets choose a theme • Each group brainstorm a list of activities that could be used in various social studies areas

  16. Flip through these magazines • Post it any toys that would help increase social studies/culture/multicultural education
