  5. Summer Service Description • Summer Program • Children in grades 1 – 8 • Academic setup: classroom etiquette • Focus in literacy and science • Prepare children for upcoming grade level

  6. Staff Training • Managing Child Behavior (2 Step) • Learn about different scenarios • Role Playing • Appropriate ways of addressing certain behaviors • Importance of verbal/physical Language • Reacting to child abuse or being aware of a child that is in a home where child abuse is occurring

My Role in the Beacon • Program Aide (Teacher) • Assigned a class of 20 third grade students • Responsible for developing lesson plans based on the class theme • Produce 5 science projects for the children to present at the end of the summer • Field Trips • Responsible for the safety and well being on the children when traveling outdoors • Documentation

Benefit of Having Experience in Child Care • Beacon Center / Boys & Girls Club • Concentration: Pre-Veterinary Medicine • Impressive background • Ability to relay information easily to patients • Sociability with all types of people, including young children • Work cooperatively with co-workers, parents & children

  9. Role Modeling • Uphold a certain belief in the presence of children by enforcing • alcohol, drug and smoke free lifestyles • use of proper language • mature behavior • respect for themselves and each other • Consistency is key

Student Progress • Children are expected to improve on their weaknesses and sharpen their strengths • Fill out Student Progress Reports for each student so we may better address their problems • Suggest one-on-one tutoring • Recommending certain programs to be available to students, such as Special Education classes and ESL • Rewards System • Trips, prizes

  11. Program Statistics • Mainly Hispanic, African American • Many from disadvantaged/low-income homes • Range from 6 to 14 years old
