  3. Birth Control Methods • Condoms • Oral Contraceptives (pills) • Depo Provera (shot) • The Patch • The Ring • Approximately 1,500 teenage girls in Bexar County get pregnant every year! (according to Project Worth website: www.sanantonio.gov/projectworth/factsheet03.pdf)

  4. Using Condoms • Must be used every time • Advantages • easy to use • don’t need prescription • provides protection from STDs! • Disadvantages • interrupt sex • can break during sex • Out of 100 women 14 get pregnant in a year

  5. Using Oral Contraceptive (pills) • Must be taken every day at the same time • Advantages • works great • periods lighter and less cramping • may improve acne • Disadvantages • does not protect from STDs • must remember • Out of 100 women 3-5 get pregnant in a year

  6. Using Depo Provera(shot) • Injection (shot) every 3 months • Advantages • lasts 3 months • periods lighter and less cramping • Disadvantages • does not protect from STDs • irregular periods • Out of 100 women 1 gets pregnant in a year

  7. Using The Patch • New patch once a week for 3 weeks • Nothing for the 4th week during period • Advantages • easy to use and very effective • may improve acne • Disadvantages • does not protect from STDs • may have irregular spotting • Out of 100 women 2 get pregnant in a year

  8. Using The Ring • Inserted into vagina and left in for 3 weeks • Take out and nothing 4th week during period • Advantages • easy to use and works great • periods lighter and less cramping • Disadvantages • does not protect from STDs • Out of 100 women 2 get pregnant in a year
