Outline • Develop both a reliable and cost effective method of storing and delivering multimedia content in a diverse environment. • Configure and allow administrators secure remote access to the distribution system. • Ensure client accessibility and ease of use.
Motivation • Personal interest after doing work at both a cable TV and radio station in Carahue, Chile • An interest in making interactive methods of learning accessible to a larger audience. • Personal interest in Linux based operating systems and their capabilities • To make people’s lives easier
Introduction • Voice and video over IP have become common. Skype™ and YouTube™ are popular examples.
Introduction • Business meetings can happen without physical presence • A professor can lecture to classes in different locations
Introduction • Facility has over three-hundred client computers and over one thousand users across 3 buildings.
Problem Statement • How do we implement a multimedia distribution system to handle these users? • How do we keep this solution cost-effective and scalable
Servers Dell Optiplex GX110 -1200 MHz Celeron Processor -384 MB SDRAM -two 30 GB IDE HDDs -Web-cam Dell PowerEdge 4400 -733 MHz Pentium III Xeon processor -256 MB registered SDRAM -four 9 GB SCSI HDDs in a RAID-5 configuration -Web-cam -TV-tuner
Software • Windows 2003 Server • Ubuntu Linux 8.04 (Hardy Heron) • VideoLAN • Windows Media Encoder • Windows Media Services • tightVNC • LogMeIn
Dead server • Thunderstorm destroyed the Ubuntu Server • System still works in place due to built in redundancy

Future Work • Live-CD distribution • Secure web access to multimedia • MythTV as an easy to use client
