ICAO Seminar on Aeronautical spectrum management(Cairo, 7 – 17 June 2006)ULTRA WIDE BAND TECHNOLOGYA THREAT OR NOT TO AVIATION ?(presented by Eurocontrol)
STATUS • TG 1/8 CLOSED THE UWB QUESTION IN ITU Autumn 2005 • Outcome: recommendation made however ultimate decision on UWB emission limits and regulation left with the State • TG 3 (The European technical study group), reviewed this decision and put forward proposed European limits to ECC • ECC consultation process • on general UWB applications closed on 24/12/05 • On 3.1-4.8 GHz applications closed on 29/05/06 • Aviations (EUROCONTROL + Adm.) complained for radars, radio- altimeters and MLS • Outcomes: 24/12/05 More stringent values in order to better protect primary radars
So what is done/planned ? 1. Response to the consultation process 2. Testing of the 4 ‘threatened’ services with real UWB signal - UK Radar tests -DFS radar tests -Eurocontrol/EC PULSERS1 testing (emphasis should be on 9 GHz airport radar) 1 Pervasive Ultra Wideband Spectral Energy Radio Systems (PULSERS) – a European Industry/EC initiative
UWB Allowable Field strength vs Distance UK TESTING
DFS Testing • Bosch provide UWB-radar (wall probing, ..) simulators • No testing with UWB-communication with are the to-morrow mass market • Tested : PSR L an S bands, mode S, SSR • Outcomes: L band PSR is the most vulnerable to UWB-radar interference
NEXT STEPS • Validation testing on the 4 affected systems, need cooperation with PULSERS • Participate in and influence ECC / TG3 closedown process as necessary
