  1. Iliad Book 9 Speech Stefano DiCenso Cole Davis

  2. Summary I Agamemnon in this passage openly proclaim my wrong doings against Achilles. I confess that the Greeks can not win the war against Troy without him. Therefore if he fought for us I shall give him seven unfired tripods, gold, twenty shining cauldrons, twelve race horses, seven women of Lesbos, Briseis, and any of the spoils of war that he desires from the sacking of Troy. Also on our trip home I will make him my son-in-law by giving him his choice of one of my daughters and seven citadels all if he comes back.

  3. Context and Purpose Agamemnon is the person speaking. He is speaking to old Nestor. Agamemnon refers to an “aged sir” also known as Nestor. The event that precedes this speech is Nestor speaking to Agamemnon about Achilles. The event that follows is Achilles’ rejection of Agamemnon's offers. Agamemnon is responding to Nestor’s speech. Agamemnon’s purpose is to convince Achilles to rejoin the Greek army. “The man whom Zeus in his heart loves”

  4. Analysis Repetition of the word honor. Agamemnon says, “and to all this I will swear a great oath that I never entered into her bed and never laid with her as is natural for human people, between men and women”- this shows that Agamemnon did not dishonor him in that way trying to show Achilles that his promises were valid. “Worth many fighters is that man whom Zeus in his heart loves, as now he has honored this man and beaten down the Achaian people.

  5. Analysis (continued) Inasmuch- to such a degree, seeing that. Simile- 9:147-148, “And with girl I will grant him as dowry many gifts, such as no man ever gave with his daughter. Personification- 9:152, “Aipeai the lovely,” referring to a citadel.

  6. Greek Values The Greek value mentioned most often is Time or honor. Example- “I will honor him with Orestes my growing son, who is brought up there in abundant luxury” It is the reason Achilles left. Agamemnon emphasizes it so Achilles would come back to the Greeks.

  7. Persuasive Techniques Agamemnon flatters Achilles with praise and complements about his Arete. He repeatedly mentions many different and great gifts that he will bestow upon Achilles. This is an example of pathos because he says good things about Achilles which makes him want to listen to Agamemnon.

  8. Conclusion Even though Agamemnon offers many gifts to Achilles to return, Achilles rejects the offers because of his stubbornness and pride also known Time.
