  2. Welcome, Parents! Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to attend this important evening. I welcome this opportunity to share Forsyth County’s kindergarten curriculum with you, which is aligned with Common Core. Because this is a group setting and our time is limited, I am unable to address questions about your child specifically this evening. Please call or email me with your questions or concerns so we can arrange to discuss them privately at a later date and time.

  3. Reading • Daily Five • Shared Reading: whole class • Guided Reading: small group instruction

  4. Reading and Phonics • Dr. Cindy Cupp, author • Small groups, direct instruction • Emphasis on phonics, phonemic awareness • Learn and reinforce vocabulary and reading strategies • Dr. Cupp’s website is www.cindycupp.com

  5. Writing • Interactive • Guided • Journals • Letter formation

  6. Math Frameworks • Common Core unit frameworks • Math Tubs • Manipulatives • Flip charts • Hands-on activities

  7. Social Studies/Science • Integrated into curriculum: • Social Studies Content Areas: -Economic, geographic, government, historic understandings • Science Content Areas: -Earth, life, physical sciences

  8. Specials • Specials rotate every four weeks • Art with Ms. Cato • Music with Mrs. Kirkland • Science with Mrs. Mahoney • PE with Coach Furstenberg • Music and Motion with Coach Heil • Please wear tennis shoes on PE days

  9. Lunchroom Protocol • You are always welcome to eat lunch with your child in the cafeteria, except during testing and on Early Release days • Check–in at the front desk • Meet your child in the cafeteria at the class’ scheduled lunch time • Sit with your child at a table reserved for parents • No fast-food items may be brought to school

  10. Lunchroom Protocol con’t. • Extra items available for purchase • Ice Cream – Fridays only, 75¢ • Items may be charged to your child’s lunch account, so let your child know what they can or can’t purchase • All snacks for the class must be store bought.

  11. Daily Blue Folders • Daily communication between us – please check and return to school daily • Notes, money from home • Transportation changes • Daily behavior chart • Checked or graded class work • Letter information • Homework, reading log

  12. Homework • Monthly calendar or weekly assignments for all students • Assignments, hands-on activities reinforce classroom curriculum and state standards • Language arts • Math • Reading nightly, monthly reading log • Life skills

  13. Daily Behavior Chart • Green, Yellow, Red - noted daily • Green: everyone begins the day here • Yellow: after numerous redirections • Loss of five minutes learning center time or Wisdom Walk during recess • Red: child continues or refuses to comply with teacher’s redirection • Loss of learning center time • Hitting, other behavior that endangers heath or safety of another child • Call or visit to guidance counselor or administrator

  14. Transportation Changes • All transportation changes must be in writing • Phone calls and e-mails are not acceptable • Last-minute or emergency phone calls, faxes, e-mails will not be accepted • Notes must include • Child’s first and last name • Teacher’s name • Usual form of transportation and transportation change • Effective day or dates of change, ie. Monday, 9/6/11 only • Parent’s contact number • Parent’s signature

Parent Volunteers • Parents are a child’s first and most important teachers; before a child is a student, she is first an important member of a family. • The biggest factor in a child’s success in school is the level of parent involvement in the child’s day-to-day school experiences, not the quality of the school or the teacher’s expertise and experience. • Volunteer hours are between 9:00-2:30.

  16. Parent Volunteers • Parent volunteers should limit time in the classroom to no more than 1 hour per day. This should be scheduled in advance. • Younger siblings should not accompany volunteers to the classroom. • There will be no visitors on testing or early release days, due to a condensed instructional day.

  17. Parent Conferences • October: -Conferences are scheduled every 20 minutes, each lasting approximately 15 minutes -Please sign up for your time tonight on the back table. If you did not get a chance or were not able to make it, I will send out remaining available times.

Please respect the quality of instructional time by calling to schedule a time to visit or volunteer in the class.
