The Scheme of work; course one • “ Man, Environment and Culture” • The aim: To study and understand the relationship between a man and his environment from the early stages of a human being up to the late 19th century. • The term of culture should be understood in a broader sense, as an example of all the creations by human beings to survive ( footprints of a man)

  3. History can be divided into different sections • Political history • Social history • Cultural history • Economic history • Environmental history • World history • History of a nation • Local history

Pre-IB history • The main focus will be on the European social, economic and environmental history • From first people in Europe up to the industrialization • Ancient Greece and Rome • The Middle Ages; from Agricultural Europe to the rise of towns and societies • The Renaissance; Cultural and Religious challenges • Absolute Rulers, Europe and the wider world

  5. Pre-IB history • Enlightenment and the idea of liberty, liberalism and nationalism • Industrialization • Agricultural changes

  6. Introduction: IB-history • The main focus will be on the political, economic and social history • Topics from the 20th century ; Authoritarian States, Cold War • Prescribed Subject : The Move to Global War • Regional Options for HL ( History of Europe, 19th -20th century

  8. Historical sources • Work as pairs to produce a list of the main types of historical sources • You should include comments on ORIGIN, PURPOSE, VALUE AND LIMITATIONS OF each source • We must be critical on sources!!

  9. The Identity of Europe ( pp. 8-21, 29) • Working as pairs ; write an essay dealing with the European Identity • Is there something like European culture? • How can we describe the culture of Europe? • Who are Europeans? • Geography • Languages • Values
