Background Information about the Balti People • Originated from Zhangzhung, an ancient culture and kingdom in northwestern Tibet. • The Balti is a majority of Indian Muslim communities. • Converted to Islam from Tibetan Buddhism in the 16th century. • Average income is only $120 US. • Modern Balti people are not all Tibetan. • Over time, many tribes combined with the Tibetans, like the Shins, Yashkuns, Arabs, Persians, and Turks. Central Asian Institute and Pennies for Peace • The Central Asia Institute was co-founded by Greg Mortenson and Jean Hoerni. • The mission of the institute is to promote education and literacy programs in remote Afghanistan and Pakistan. • They have built 131 schools, which educate over 58,000 children, 44,000 of which are girls. • They educate victims of the 2005 Kashmir Earthquake, which killed nearly 18,000 students, and displaced 2.8 million people. • CAI has built or re-established 16 schools destroyed in the earthquake. • Pennies for Peace is an international service learning program sponsored by the CAI. • Pennies for Peace was started by students at Westside Elementary School, in River Falls, Wisconsin. • The students collected 62,340 pennies for a school in Pakistan. • It is based in Evergreen Colorado, and has collected over 30,000,000 pennies since its start in 1994.

(1977-1979) • Awarded the Army Commendation Medal. • Escaped firefight with Afghan warlords by hiding under animal hides for eight hours. • Awarded the Sitara-e-Pakistan (Star of Pakistan) in 2009, which is the highest civil award in Pakistan. • Congresswoman Mary Bono (Rep – Cali.) says, “I’ve learned more from Greg Mortenson about the causes of terrorism than I did during all our briefings on Capitol Hill.
