  1. Open Ended Questions

  2. A.C.E. • Steps for successfully answering an open ended question. • Answer the question by re-stating it. • Cite from the text using details and quotes to support your answer. • Explain how your citations support your answer.

  3. Meat-based diet unacceptable Question: In the last sentence, the author states, “I challenge you to justify to yourself your choice to eat meat.” • What does the author mean? • How might someone refute this article?

  4. Meat-based diet unacceptable A: In the last sentence of the article, “Meat-based diet unacceptable” the author states that, “I challenge you to justify to yourself your choice to eat meat.”

  5. Meat-based diet unacceptable C & E: • What the author is trying to imply with that statement, is that meat-eaters cannot justify why they eat meat. Non-meat eaters, on the other hand, do not find it, “difficult at all to justify vegetarianism”. Throughout the article, he provides examples proving his thesis that, “eating meat is…unhealthy, wasteful and sadistic.” He points out that meat-eaters suffer more from kidney disease than vegetarians because of the way the meat gets digested. He also brings out the fact that meat eaters have higher cholesterol and body fat than vegetarians. With all of these facts, it makes becoming a vegetarian seem like the healthier, more practical choice.

  6. Meat-based diet unacceptable Part two of open ended: • Someone reading this article might have ways to refute it. Just like anything else in life, eating meat cannot be all bad. Someone can easily point out the benefits to eating meat, just like the author did for vegetarianism. Another way to refute it could be to suggest another diet that is not strictly meat-based nor vegetarian. Perhaps a diet that has a higher vegetarian intake, with some meat would be a better choice than what the author states in his article. Like my mother always used to say, there is always two sides to a story.
