  2. What is the Definition of Plant Operations? • The key is to define exactly the purpose of the “plant” or “facility” • Fusion Materials Test Facility and Component Test Facility would emphasize continuous high output operation to gather as much data as possible. Demonstrating maintenance would not be considered much. Test campaigns will be the primary purpose. • The Integrated Test Facility would focus on getting all components and systems operational with some flexibility in operations to test out combinations as well as longer term operations. Maintenance might be addressed but not a primary objective. Purpose is to show integrated system operations and optimize operational scenarios. Test campaigns will be coordinated with longer operational demonstrations. • The Demo would try to demonstrate all key power plant objectives to a reasonable degree (maybe up to 85% of power plant characteristics). This certainly addresses performance and all RAM aspects. It would produce electricity but this is not the primary objective. Test campaigns will be minimized within the longer operational periods on a non-interference basis. • The Prototype plant would closely mimic size and performance of a full sized power plant. It would certainly produce near power plant performance for power production and availability over long periods of operation. Test campaigns will not be conducted. These definitions should be considered as preliminary and may need to be refined

  3. Purpose, Scope and Membersof ARIES-TNS Operations TWG Purpose: Develop operational plans and recommended R&E to mitigate risk of plant operation Scope: - Develop operational requirements for Operations, RAMI, and test campaigns (need purpose of TNS plant to be defined) - Consider IHMS implications on operations - Identify R&D items that could reduce Operational Risk - Develop Operations R&D projects and plans - Consider both test operations as well as normal operations - Translate operational requirements into design requirements Tentative Members: Les Waganer, Boeing, Lead Dave Gates, PPPL Chuck Kessel, PPPL John Menard, PPPL Lee Cadwallander, INL Said Abdel-Khalik, GIT Rich Peipert, Boeing Tom Luce, GA (busy?) Suggestions Reduce PPPL participation More GA participation Enlist Advisory Committee

  4. TWG Plans • Firm up working group membership • Review Purpose and Scope • Define Schedule • Decide on telecon frequency • Determine, secure, and evaluate sources of information • Utility Advisory Committee • ARIES-Starlite • Review experimental operational requirements, plans and R&D • Include DIII-D and ITER • Assign actions to be accomplished
