AAC&U Conference • We had two(2) volunteer • We have 3 others going- possibly others? • If anyone is still interested let us know • We will conduct a “coordinating” mtg a week or so prior- if you look at the agenda and feel we really need to hear something let us know and we will coordinate that • AAC&U Conference- General Education and Assessment: Foundations for Democracy- Philadelphia: Feb. 15-17

Scheduling Exercise 8 Groups of 4-5 We have developed 8 student scenarios- each group will be assigned a student profile and you will explore the process of making a schedule Focus on what you feel you are “getting”from this- do you understand “why” and can you get “what” you need? What was missing and what could be different?

Group Activity/Homework Create 5 groups of 8 Task: Develop a first 60 hours (4 semesters) outline of what an undergraduate should experience/receive- we will leave the level of specificity up to you No limitations- assume the Gates Foundation just gave you $1 Billion and asked you to re-design UVU- we want your best thinking not your constrained attempt Report out next week- 10 minutes- either handouts, slides or dancing ponies- you choose

Basic GE Models A la carte Clusters Cross Disciplinary Intentional groupings of “intro” courses- this may facilitate scheduling (cohorts) and/or topical study or other intentional purposes Courses designed around topical areas and generally not attached to a specific department. Often team taught and cohort based A pick list of courses organized around macro disciplinary areas (social sciences, etc.)- generally the “Intro” course for a program of study General USHE model & UVU model(?) around 60% of Higher Ed. Next most common- 20-25%- Vistas? Least common (10-15%) but often described as most desired Obviously Pros and Cons with each model

  9. 2nd Homework Assignment Colleges/Schools or “other” units and constituencies represented here- so SA’s, Students, AA’s and External Invites……… Conduct a meeting or event where you solicit input- please invite us so we can sit and listen Type of input- “What should Undergrad/GE look like (model) and what is your best idea for ensuring it meets our students needs? The answer may be it is fine leave it alone- we are not trying to force a response but do want to hear from as many voices as possible Report back the top 2-3 things heard- how you aggregate that is up to you and we would like the bigger list of all ideas shared- we can provide note taking assistance, facilitation, room scheduling, etc.- let us know Due on January 31st- we will then aggregate and report out at the meeting on February 1 if possible. We will also distribute all results amongst the group and post.
