Allah is one God.” Sura 4:171 “Muhammad is no more than a Messenger….” Sura 3:144 How do you think the beliefs expressed in these quotes might relate to Islamic art and architecture?

Objectives Students will be able to: • Identify key architectural structures in Islamic architecture and geometric patterns in Islamic art. • Recall and define terms related to Islamic religious rituals, art, and architecture. • Explain the linkages between belief and artistic representation in Islamic art and architecture.

  3. Guiding Question • How might an appreciation of Islamic art and architecture inform our thinking about Islamic culture and the Islamic world?

  4. Please Remember Islamic art and architecture, like the salat, are intended to draw Muslims closer to Allah (the God) in the most direct way possible – without distractions.
