  2. What is Culinary Arts? • Culinary arts is the art of preparing and cooking foods. The word "culinary" is defined as something related to, or connected with, cooking. They also have to be able to prepare the food so it is pleasant to the eye.

Safety in Culinary Arts • Culinary arts can be dangerous when using certain cooking materials. • It is smart to use safety procedures to ensure your safety and others around you. • Always wear gloves to prevent spreading of germs. • Make sure to be EXTREMELY careful when dealing with knives and sharp objects. • NEVER leave the oven unattended. • Always make sure you have oven mitts or something to help prevent burning your hands.

  4. The History of Culinary Arts • The history of culinary arts goes all the way back to 1800’s when the very first cooking school in Boston was teaching the art of American cooking. The first cookbook ever written was by Fannie Merrit Farmer in 1896 who also attended the Boston cooking school and her book is still used by many today as a reference to cooking.

  5. Culinary Arts Career Opportunities • Chef- Often the most skilled cooks in restaurants and shapes the menu and is a very highly regarded position. • Pastry Chefs- They create desserts, breads, pastries, cookies, and other baked goods. They work in any range of restaurants. • Food Service Managers-They are in charge of the daily operations of restaurants, banuet halls, cafeterias, diners, and other food establishments.
