  1. The Great GatsbyReader Response #1 • Listen to the following musical selections. What images and words come to you as you listen? Write at least five sentences!

  2. The Great Gatsby- Reader Response #2 Chapter One- page 6-8: Select three descriptions involving the use of color- you don’t need to write the whole quote, just the descriptive images. Then write a minimum of five sentences interpreting the images that are created through this use of imagery and the symbolism of the colors.

  3. “ . . . -he stretched out his arms toward the dark water in a curious way, and far as I was from him I could have sworn he was trembling. Involuntarily I glanced seaward- and distinguished nothing except a single green light, minute and far away, that might have been the end of a dock. When I looked once more for Gatsby he had vanished, and I was alone again in the unquiet dark” (26). Reader Response #3: *write four sentences minimum! How do you define the “American dream”? What is it and what does it mean to you? What is your “American dream”?

  4. The Great Gatsby: Reader Response #4 Chapter 2: pages 23-25 Read back through the beginning of chapter 2. Find three descriptions of the color gray or the idea of death. Write down the descriptions- not the entire sentence, just the description and a minimum of five sentences about what image Fitzgerald constructs with the valley of ashes.

  11. The Great Gatsby Reader Response #11 “Possibly it had occurred to him that the colossal significance of that light had now vanished forever. Compared to the great distance that had separated him from Daisy it had seemed very near to her, almost touching her. It had seemed as close as a star to the moon. Now it was again a green light on a dock. His count of enchanted objects had diminished by one” (93). Why has the “colossal significance” of the green light at the end of Daisy’s dock “vanished forever” once Gatsby has met Daisy again? Can you relate to this experience of anticipation versus reality? Describe your experience.

What does Gatsby want to repeat? Is it possible- why or why not? Do you agree or disagree with Gatsby- why or why not?

The Great Gatsby Reader Response#17- Final Reader Response Fitzgerald is considered a lyrical writer which means he uses words the way an artist uses a paintbrush to describe a scene or an emotion. Find one quote in the book in which Fitzgerald uses descriptive imagery and write it down. Then write five sentences about the underlying meaning of that quote and why you like it.
