Suggestions/Recommendations • Curriculum & Instruction: • Multiple Learning & Teaching Approaches • Teachers have free reign & creativity to teach, but need to be aware of learning styles and your students’ learning styles • Effective teaching involves effective organization and management Expand Teaming Protocols • Teachers need training and direction regarding how to operate as a team • Teachers need training on curricular connections & interdisciplinary activities • Teams should incorporate “team values” for team members & students • Teams should have “team rules” to operate effectively • Increase team planning time correlates positively with “response capacity” of school

Assessment • Alternate means of assessment should be used on multiple intelligences • Careful analysis of data should be used to drive instruction • Learning styles should be assessed at the beginning of the year • Students should be knowledgeable of their learning styles and how to study using their individual style. • Tutoring opportunities • Create a tutorial link for Genesis on district website • NJASK Campaign • Countdown to testing week • Timed tests • Pre/Post tests • Familiarize students with test (length, procedures, format, etc.)

School Community • Suggestions for improving the learning environment • Implement classroom/school rules on 5 life skills • Be here (on time, on task, here to learn) • Be prepared (pen, notebook, book, homework, etc.) • Be respectful • Be honest • Be a good listener • All teachers and administrators need to use the same language and key words • Students sign a Canuck contract, which includes a point system for violations • Consistency is key—Enforce same rules in all classrooms, hallways, lunchroom • Posters will be made and hung in all classrooms • Expand positive ways to encourage good behavior

  6. School community: part 2 • Beginning of Year Team Building Activity/Student Orientation Goals: • To create and build a relationship between students and teachers • To introduce the Canuck Contract • To promote active engagement in learning • Start the year on a positive fun

Communications & Community relations • Parent Workshop • Early fall date • Possible connection to student dance or parent dinner • Topics to include: • Use of Genesis • Information available on teacher’s website • Need for library card • Checking of agenda book/homework assignments/tests/quizzes • Parent/Teacher Conferences (Fall & Spring) • Survey Parents • Change comments for report cards/progress reports-Make more specific • Increase use of technology for communication (On-line blog/forum) • Inform, Invite & Involve parents of school activities • Find organizations/businesses to support school activities
