  3. Auguste Chouteau • Only 13 when he helped found St. Louis • In charge of a group of men that surveyed the land

  4. High Flood Stage • Close to the Mississippi and Missouri River St. Louis in 1855

  5. Growth of the City • Grew because of the fur trading business and the huge amounts of raw materials. • Laclede’s Fur Trading Company expand in 5 years • Started at nothing and became an $80,000 company • It was named the Western Fur Trade

  6. Louisiana Purchase

  7. Louisiana Territory Purchased in 1803 • Bought from Napoleon Bonaparte to help fund his war efforts • Bought for $15 million by President Thomas Jefferson • Eventually would include the state of Missouri and 14 other states

  8. Three Flags Day • March 9th 1804 • The city had a Spanish, French, and American Flag posted at the same time • Is still celebrated today

  9. Population Soaring • Started in 1803 due to the Lewis & Clark Expedition • Most of the people that came to the city at the time migrated from the East Coast • 1840- people started to immigrate to the city because of the Potato Famine & the German Revolution

  21. Civil War • The Union controlled the state for the whole war • The war divided family and friends in the city • 5000 people migrated to the South during the war due to disloyal thoughts and to fight • People that stayed and were for the south • Smuggled medicine • Spied • Sabotage
