  1. Welcome to English 12-3 Fall 2015 Mrs. Teed

  2. Course Overview • English 12-3 is a general language arts course that uses reading, writing, representing and speaking to expand upon the skills you have acquired in your previous English Language Arts classes.

  3. Course of Study • Visual Text (pictures, graphs, webpages, etc.) • Extended Text (The Glass Castle) • Multi-genre Writing • Independent Novel (minimum of 1) • Work/Life Preparation

  4. Independent Reading • Each student will be required to read our class novel as well as (at least) one self-selected text this semester. • Failure to do the additional reading will reflect poorly on your mark for this course. • It is expected (NB Achievement Standards) that each grade 12 student read outside of instructional (class) time for at least 15-20 minutes a day.

  5. Independent Reading cont. • Guided study classes will allow for some of this reading to take place (60 minutes/week), therefore all you need to do is 15-20 minutes outside of class time • You will also have 15 minutes at the beginning of class each Monday, Wednesday and Friday. On these days you are expected to begin reading at the bell with little to no instruction. • Please have a book to read by Monday, September 14 • If you need help choosing or attaining a book, I would be happy to help you.

  6. Assessment • A variety of formative (practice) and summative (final) evaluations will be used throughout the semester to assess your achievement of the required skills. The evaluations may include: • Tests and Quizzes • Writing Assignments (including weekly journals) • Reports • Other

  7. Important things to remember • The pass mark is 60%. • Grade 12 English is a one semester course and is a graduation requirement. • Attendance is the key to success in this course. • Deadlines are not optional. If an assignment is not in on time, you will be required to stay in on your own time until the work is completed.

  8. In case of absence… • YOU are responsible for what you miss in class when you are not here. • Absences should be few and far between – in the case of a necessary absence from class, YOU must do one/both of the following (ideally BEFORE returning to class): • Check the wiki: jteed.pbworks.com • Call/Text a classmate to see what we did in class and ask them for any notes/material/assignments you missed.

  9. Expectations • Be here – if you attend, you will get the credit. Every single person who attended class regularly last year, got this course. • Be respectful of those around you and yourself. • This means being on time, thinking before you speak/react, and understanding that we don’t all have to agree on every issue to be able to co-exist. It’s ok to have different opinions, viewpoints and beliefs. Think for yourself. • If we can adhere to the first two expectations, the rest should take care of itself.

  10. Let’s do this! Grad Year!!
