  2. Residential Plumbing Components • A residential plumbing system is made up of THREE major subsystems. • Supply : Carries water from underground water mains, storage tank, or well into the building for distribution to various fixtures.

  3. Residential Plumbing Components • A residential plumbing system is made up of THREE major subsystems. • Supply : Carries water from underground water mains, storage tank, or well into the building for distribution to various fixtures. • Drain / Waste : Allows for the removal of gray water ( wash water) and black water (sewage) from the building.

  4. Residential Plumbing Components • A residential plumbing system is made up of THREE major subsystems. • Vent : Removes sewer gases that are present in the system and maintains atmospheric pressure within the drain / waste system.

  5. Residential Plumbing Components • Supply ComponentsFresh water is piped into the house by means of a ¾ - 1“ copper pipe at about 75 PSI. The pressure is reduced to about 43 PSI by a device inserted into the line called a Pressure Reducing Valve.

  6. Residential Plumbing Components • Supply ComponentsFresh water is piped into the house by means of a ¾ - 1“ copper pipe at about 75 PSI. The pressure is reduced to about 43 PSI by a device inserted into the line called a Pressure Reducing Valve. • Note:Failure to reduce the pressure may result in personal injury and fixture damage.

  7. Residential Plumbing Components • Supply Components (Con’t)Main Shut Off Valve : Large gate or globe valve located near the entry of the water supply into the house. Controls the flow of water into the entire house.

  8. Residential Plumbing Components • Supply Components (Con’t)Hot Water Tank : A device used to heat water for distribution to the house.

  9. Residential Plumbing Components • Supply Components (Con’t)Hot Water Tank : A device used to heat water for distribution to the house. • Anti-Siphon Valve: Special valve attached to the top of the hot water tank that prevents the tank from being drained in the event of a pressure drop.

  10. Residential Plumbing Components • Supply Components (Con’t)Pressure Relief Valve : In the event that the tank becomes overheated due to a malfunction, this valve will open to prevent the buildup of steam.

  11. Residential Plumbing Components • Supply Components (Con’t)Hot / Cold Water Manifold : With the introduction of the Pex tubing used to plumb houses today many plumbers are opting to install a manifold system to better supply water to the various fixtures within the home.

  12. Residential Plumbing Components • Supply Components (Con’t)Shut off Valves: Small globe valves installed on individual fixtures that are used to control the water supply to that fixture.

  13. Residential Plumbing Components • Supply Components (Con’t)Shut off Valves: Small globe valves installed on individual fixtures that are used to control the water supply to that fixture. • Air Chambers: Addition piping or tubing installed within the supply system to act as a shock absorber to reduce hydraulic hammering (noisy pipe).
