  1. Introducing…the IQ Milking UnitA Smarter Way to Milk Cows

  2. Researched For 2½ Years… • Hunter Haven 2x12 Magnum 90i in Illinois milking 900 cows. • Bru-Crest Dairy 28-stall Magnum 90 AutoRotor in Pennsylvania. • Dejong Dairy 80-stall Magnum 90 AutoRotor in Indiana. • Ridgeview Dairy 28-stall Internal AutoRotor in Alberta. What did we find? • Lower somatic cell counts. • Lower Coliform counts. • Higher milk flow rates. • Faster milk out times. • Cleaner milk filters.

  3. DLG Silver Award The German agriculture publisher elected the IQ to the “innovation of the year 2009“. DLG silver medal.

  4. RABDF Prince Phillip Award 2009

  5. The IQ Milking Unit • Award winning “patented” technology! • Maximum milk quality • Improved udder health • Faster milk-out times. • More reliable performance. • Quieter operation. • Easy maintenance.

  6. IQ - How Does it Work? Optimal hold on the udder. Superior guidance of the milk. Maximum milk quality. Quick and easy handling.

  7. Optimal Hold on the Udder Flexible liner design. Pre-formed end piece of the liner. Optimized weight distribution (center of mass). Slim-built design (reduces kick-offs). Combined attachment of milk hose and twin pulsation hose.

  8. Optimal Hold on the Udder • Flexible area of the short milk tube has been nearly doubled. • Vastly improved adaptability to every udder form. • The milking unit simply hangs better on the udder. • Improved work efficiency and operator comfort due to less walking (no adjustment needed). • Squawks are virtually eliminated!

  9. Optimal Hold on the Udder The specially formed connecting piece on the liner provides an optimal angle to the milking unit. The angle ensures that the milking unit fits perfectly under the udder for a better hold with more balance.

  10. Optimal Hold on the Udder • The center of mass of the milking unit is shifted towards the rear. • You therefore achieve consistent and quick milk-out on all quarters which will improve your throughput, flow, etc. • The weight distribution from the front to the rear is further optimized to support the negative powers of the long milk tubes.

  11. Optimal Hold on the Udder • The weight is there where it is required – on the teat! • Hardly any pulling on the teats ensures optimum milking and improved hold. 80 20 • The distribution of weight between the shells and claw has been maintained in order to ensure optimal unit position.

  12. Optimal Hold on the Udder

  13. Optimal Hold on the Udder • The connecting tubes for milk and air were placed together to counter the stiffening of the milking unit. • More flexibility under the udder. • Improved hold.

  14. Optimal Hold on the Udder • Internal pulsation tubes allow for a narrow profile. • This makes it more difficult to knock the unit off! • Less cows need to be reattached which gives you more time to observe your cows, prep, etc.

  15. Guidance of the Milk No teat-to-teat cross contamination. Quarter separation. Milk line.

  16. Guidance of the Milk • The complete separation of milk from individual quarters ensures that the milk is taken away without the milk from one quarter being able to reach the tip of the teat in another quarter. • Teat-to-teat cross contamination is therefore eliminated. • A smaller number of mastitis cases lowers the cost of treatment and wasted milk.

  17. Guidance of the milk • The vacuum in the milking unit remains stable even under the highest milk flows. • Better hold at high milk flows ensures optimal milking results and improved working quality/less squawks. • 34 of 35 test farms saw an increase in milk flow rates! • The unit uses kinetic energy to guide the milk. This increases capacity as the milk is moved quickly to the 16mm hose.

  18. Milk Quality Automatic vacuum shutoff. Milking routine. Automatic shutoff at kick-off.

  19. Milk Quality • Normally up to 25 cubic feet of air/min. enters the system through a teat cup (vacuum cleaner). • However, in total only 39-44 cubic feet of air/min. penetrates through all four cups. And, in the new IQ Milking Unit? • Thanks to automatic shutoff/kick-off, about 2.2 cubic feet of air/min enters the system through each teat cup. • That means 8.5 cubic feet of air/min. through all four cups.

  20. Milk Quality • Silent and low air leakage prior to attachment. • Higher milk quality - Less chance of organic matter sucked into the milking system! • Cleaner milk filters and lower bacteria counts. • The full vacuum is only activated once the liner has been closed off by the teat.

  21. Milk Quality • Even “poor“ operators are able to work with this unit without negatively influencing milk quality. • No fundamental vacuum intrusion in the attachment phase. • Virtually no suction of “dirt” or foreign matter during unit attachment.

  22. Milk Quality • And, if a cup falls off, the ball automatically closes off the liner so that no dirt/soil can get into the milk supply. → Reduced contamination of the milk. → Improved milk quality.

  23. Handling of the IQ Milking Unit Attachment. Cleaning of air inlets. Twisting. Liner replacement. Assembly time.

  24. Handling of the IQ Milking Unit • No tubes need to be squeezed when attaching (shutting off the vacuum). • The milking unit does not need to be held completely as debris won’t be sucked up. • Attachment routine can be simpler as a result of the design.

  25. Handling of the IQ Milking Unit • THE ATTACHMENT ROUTINE BECOMES A MINOR POINT. • Due to the limited air inlet, the loud noise is virtually eliminated. • “We noticed less kick-offs and less nervous heifers immediately because of the noise reduction.” - Hunter Haven Farms

  26. Handling of the IQ Milking Unit • When necessary, cleaning is easy to perform and does not require any tools (they pulse during milking so they are to a certain degree, self-cleaning). • This ensures constant milking quality. • The four air inlet nozzles are made from silicone and are clearly marked by their color.

  27. Handling of the IQ Milking Unit • In various conditions teat liners can twist on the milking cup shell. (Jetter cups, HD cleaning or older liners) • A twisted liner considerably reduces the milking quality on that quarter. • Cows that have not been milked thoroughly, not only have a direct drop in milk, but also have an increased risk of mastitis.

  28. Handling of the IQ Milking Unit • Silicone and rubber liners have a mark indicating a raised part on the inside. • This fits exactly into the recess in the shell. • This means that the silicone or rubber liners can no longer twist on the shell.

  29. IQ FDA Rubber Liners • Both the round and SQ IQ liners have extended 1700 milking life.

  32. Equipment Options • The manual shut-off is included in the milk hose connector and can be easily replaced if required, if and when the system is upgraded to auto take-off.

  33. Equipment Options • The drop-down removal clip ensures a high unit removal point… … but does not get in the way during unit application & milking and floats with the cow.

  34. Equipment Options • There are two equipment air divider variants for parallel and herringbone installations to take into account of the narrower teat spacing on the rear quarters (almost all dairy breeds). Only in side to side configurations. • The IQ clamp cover (air divider) is made completely from a special, glass fiber reinforced plastic.

  35. Equipment Options • A special connector ensures optimum distribution of the water if backflush is installed. • It is not suspended with the clip on top, but with an eye on the bottom of the claw.

  36. Comparison Cluster comparison Approx. dimensions Company Height of Cluster (mm) Height of claw (mm)without /with removal eyelet Diameter of claw (mm) without milk tube connectors • Installation height and detaching point are found further up. • The diameter was also increased compared to the Classic 300: (from 100mm to 120mm)

  37. Comparison • The weight of the IQ is at our normal level. • The IQ is a little lighter in comparison to our Classic 300 when used in combination with light shells.

  42. Milking System Performance • Think today about tomorrow…regular servicing ensures successful milking! • Do we simply put our IQ’s in and forget them? NO! • Milking system needs to be checked and optimized. • Equipment with insufficient airflow is unsuitable for the IQ: • Bucket milker with small inlet/outlet. • Stanchion barn with small pipeline <50mm smaller than 2”. • Without sufficient airflow the shut-off balls cannot change position. • Narrow nipples, hoses, etc., will also limit airflow.

  43. Milking System Performance • As of today, we do not recommend using the IQ milking unit with sand bedding. • Do we simply put our IQ’s in and forget them? NO! • Take off settings may need to be adjusted as a result of faster milk-out. • Are CIP’s the same/different? • Turn off vacuum on delay. • Take off settings may need to be adjusted as a result of air not evacuating milk at kick off. • Does vacuum level need to be adjusted? Probably not, but should be checked anyway to confirm.

  44. The IQ Milking Unit • Simply a smarter way to milk cows! • Maximum milk quality • Improved udder health • Faster milk-out times. • More reliable performance. • Quieter operation. • Easy maintenance.
