    IT Asset Lifecycle Management

Refresh Deploy Upgrade/ Maintain Acquire The rapid evolution and constant use of technology causes IT assets to be taken off the network for storage, transition, repair or disposition every day.
  6. What is ITLM? changing technology landscape With higher demands, comes newer technology and shorter technology lifecycles. This rapid evolution has many organizations on a frequent refresh cycle, leaving them overloaded with unused technology equipment. Organizations are also making strategic moves to keep up with the changing landscape including data center consolidation as they move to the cloud or implement mobile technology to accommodate the workforce. In 2009, 5 MILLION TONS of electronics were in storage [EPA - 2011] A notebook PC's optimal use is 3 years, moving to 30 MONTHS [HP-2013] By 2015, 1.3 BILLION workers will be mobile, that's 37% of the workforce [IDC-2011] A Tablet's useful life is 10 to 24 MONTHS [HP-2013] The average lifespan of a server is 3 YEARS [IDC-2013] A desktop's useful life is 3 to 4 YEARS [HP-2013] 75% of enterprises are planning to launch a cloud computing strategy by 2014 [Gartner-2012]
  7. What is ITLM? focus & efficiency financial environmental RISK data security brand So, what’s the problem? Most organizations focus on the security of their network but often neglect data-bearing equipment taken off the network. If not managed properly, the effects could cause catastrophic… operational risks
  8. RISK data security risks While most data security programs are focused on keeping people out of your networks, the need for proper handling of retired physical assets is often overlooked. Organizations are collecting and managing huge amounts of data every day. Types of data that needs to be secured include intellectual property (IP), corporate financials, client data, personally identifiable information (PII), protected health information (PHI), and credit card information. 90% of all data in the world was created in the last 2 years, expanding at 20%+ per year [IBM-2013] Total cost of a data breach in 2012 from Improper Disposal was as high as $6M w/ total year average of $1.8M [Navigant 2013] Average cost of a lost laptop is $49,246 w/ data breach costs representing 80%, compared to 2% for replacing computer [Ponemon-2009] At least 29 STATES have laws that require entities to destroy, dispose, or make personal information unreadable or undecipherable [NCSL-2012] 7 MAJOR CAUSES of a data breach: Virus, Hacking, Loss, Theft, Public Access and Distribution, Unauthorized Access, & Improper Disposal [Navigant 2013] 35% of data breaches in the US resulted from physical threats [Verizon-2013] Total cost per U.S. data breach in 2012 was $5.4M at $188 per record [Ponemon-2013] Insurance & Finance was one of the most commonly breached corporate industry in 2012 [Navigant 2013] Healthcare experiences 39% of data breaches, then Corporate (23%), Education (17%) and Government (14%) [Navigant 2013] 70% of data breaches come from offline computers [BAN 2010]
  9. RISK Over the years, the value of IT assets reduces drastically. If not managed correctly, companies may be throwing huge amounts of dollars away by holding onto equipment for too long or using the wrong channels for reuse or disposition. Along with loss of IT value, potential fees from dealing with a data breach or environmental issue are also a concern. Regulatory fines, investigation and notification costs, legal fees, business downtime and decreased credibility are all financial risks of a breach. If properly prevented, organizations can avoid costly mistakes. financial concerns Within 2 years after purchase, computer value is only 1/3 initial price [National Bureau of Economic Research-2007] Cost of lost business from U.S. data breaches in 2012 was OVER $3.03M from customer turnover, acquisition, reputation loss & diminished goodwill [Ponemon-2013] Pre-HITECH, the max HIPAA penalty per year per violation was $25K, now it’s $1.5M [HHS.gov-2013] Upgrading Servers results in more than 150% ROI over 3 years [IDC 2012] Savings from a technology upgrade covers the initial investment after less than a year [IDC 2012]
  10. RISK focus & efficiency It is neither practical, nor possible to be a jack of all trades. When employees are tasked with projects they are not trained on, it may take them longer or be done incorrectly. By utilizing industry experts for specialized services to manage off-network equipment, organizations can reduce costs, increase return on investment, add flexibility to their IT team, and make sure they are in line with industry best practices, allowing them to focus on core business issues. In the last 2 years, cost as a main decision influencer has dropped from 83% to 70% when looking to outsource [KPMG - 2013] 46% of businesses say the need for better quality services was their reason for outsourcing [KPMG - 2013] 34% of companies say they outsource to gain access to IT resources internally unavailable [Sourcingmag.com-2012] “Most of what we say and do is not essential. If you can eliminate it, you’ll have more time, and more tranquility. Ask yourself at every moment, 'Is this necessary?” — Marcus Aurelius
  11. RISK environmental initiatives Sustainability efforts are now well-integrated into corporate social responsibility (CSR) and demands for accountability are growing louder. From manufacturing and distribution, to use and disposition, technology creates a toxic cycle that consumes natural resources and creates piles of hazardous waste. Choosing sustainable recovery and reuse keeps toxic waste out of the environment, prevents illegal exportation, and allows for the reuse of rare-earth metals. This all reduces the environmental impact of technology and contributes to an organization's CSR initiative, which can be publicly communicated in Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainability reports. 84% of consumers are more likely to trust a company that reports its CSR results [Cone - 2013] 3 BENEFITS of CSR include reputation, trust and improved risk management [Forbes-2013] < 1% of rare earth metals are currently recycled [EPA-2011] There are more RARE EARTH METALS in land-filled electronics than in all known global reserves [Nature Materials-2011] Guiyu, the global capital of e-waste, has the HIGHEST EVER recorded level of toxic dioxins [ES&T- 2007] Recycling metals uses just 10% of the energy required to mine new metals [UNU-2009] E-waste is the fastest growing waste stream in the world and makes up 70% of all toxic waste in US landfills [EPA-2008] <15% global e-waste undergoes any form of recycling [GIS WATCH- 2010]
  12. RISK brand security In today’s world of instant communication, branding is more important than ever. A company’s reputation in the community measured by the attitudes of its customers and employees is vital to the value of its brand. When companies make it a priority to do the right thing, stakeholders can rally behind the brand and feel good about what they stand for. Positive contributors like corporate sustainability, social responsibility and giving platforms all help build a brand, but one slip with a data breach or environmental crisis can make that image come crashing down. 42% of people’s perception of a company is based on their view of the firm’s CSR practices [Forbes-2012] 9 in 10 global citizens say they would boycott a company if they learned of irresponsible behavior [Cone - 2013] Cost of lost business from data breaches in 2012: OVER $3.03M due to customer turnover, acquisition, reputation losses and diminished goodwill [Ponemon-2013] 62% of global consumers say they use social media to address or engage with companies around CSR [Cone - 2013] Value of brand and reputation could decline as much as 17%- 31% from a data breach [Ponemon - 2012] 80% of S&P 500s’ market value is based on intangible assets, including brand reputation [Ocean Tomo - 2010]
