  4. Materials • Stethoscope • Sphygmomanometer • Blood pressure cuff • Stopwatch

  5. Methods • 1. Measure your resting breathing rate. • Count the number of breaths for 15 sec and multiply by 4. • Normal BR is about 12 breaths per minute.

  6. Methods • 2. Measure your resting heart rate (pulse). • Find your carotid artery on your neck or your radial artery on your wrist. • Count the number of beats for 15 sec and multiply by 4. • Normal HR is 60-100 beats per minute.

Measure your resting blood pressure. • Wrap the cuff around your upper arm. • Put the stethoscope on inner elbow. • Pump cuff to 180 mm Hg. • SLOWLY release the pressure, then listen carefully for the first beat. (You are listening to the Korotkoff sounds.) • This is your systolic pressure (top number). • The maximum pressure in your brachial artery

  8. Methods e. Keep listening until you hear the last beat. 1) This is your diastolic pressure (bottom number). a. The pressure between heart beats – the heart is relaxed and is filling with blood. f. Normal BP is 120/80.

  9. Methods 4. Record results on table. 5. Exercise-run up and down the stairs 5 times, repeat steps 1-3 and record on table.
