Social statistics: state of play • Current strong points: • A lot of already/soon available sources; • Solid legal bases; • Good quality of data collected; • Use of administrative data (e.g.ESSPROS, SHA); • Transmission of micro data (e.g. LFS, SILC). • Axes for improvement (identified with users): • Better use of available data; • Improve responsiveness: • Timeliness; • Information gaps; • Flexibility. Statistical solutions (1/4) • Use of already available data: • Recent progress in dissemination/communication • EUROSTAT website; • Dedicated sections; • « Statistics explained »; • SIF; • Release of data to researchers; • Adequate, user-oriented, communication is paramount. • In a near future: • multidisciplinary analyses; • study of targeted groups (e.g. migrants, early school leavers); • more proactive and focused dissemination policy. Statistical solutions (2/4) • Improve responsiveness in future, i.e.: • Improve timeliness: • Structural improvement of statistical tools (e.g. long-term harmonisation of the rotation pattern of the LFS); • Harmonise fieldwork periods (one of the possible options for SILC); • Share process/tools (e.g. LFS); • Improve timeliness of administrative data (e.g. for immigration from 3rd countries); • Produce new quick key indicators (e.g. proposal to produce SILC quick key-indicators). • Increase the frequency of data provision (increase the frequency of data collection on residence permits?) Statistical solutions (3/4) • Fill information gaps • Extend the scope of existing tools (e.g. additional information on job vacancies); • Collect additional structural information (e.g. minimum income and private pensions for ESSPROS) . Statistical solutions (4/4) • Improve flexibility: set up mechanism in case of emergency • Some actions already implemented at national level (FR, AT, SK, UK, PL). • set up new responsive monitoring tools (e.g. short NPN modules); • possible use of LFS/ICT as rapid-response tools in case of emergency (additional short-term questions)?
