  8. Research Working Group • IPv6 • Multicast Technology • Grid Computing • Security • Network Monitoring • E-Learning and Multimedia • GIS • Web cache • Distance Learning • Telemedicine

  9. Grid Computing

  10. ThaiGrid projectDr.Putchong Uthayopas • Kasetsart University • King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology North Bangkok • Suranaree University of Technology • Asian Institute of Technology • Chulalongkorn University • Walailak University • Chiangmai University • Burapa University • KMUTT • NECTEC (National Electronics and Computing Technology)

  11. Target ThaiGrid Applications • Drug Discovery Infrastructure (KU/CU) • CFD for clean room design (SUT) • Remote sensing for agricultural monitoring (AIT) • Rendering farm for Digital Media (KU/SPU) • Medical Imaging (KMITL) • Industrial Simulation (AIT) • Data Mining (Many)

  12. ThaiGrid Resources • ThaiGrid infrastructure are used • 11 Clusters from 6 organizations • AMATA – KU • GASS – KU • MAEKA – KU • WARINE – KU • CAMETA – SUT • OPTIMA - AIT • ENQUEUE – KMUTNB • PALM – KMUTNB • SPIRIT – CU • INCA – KMUTT • Eastern – Burapa University • 212 CPUs on 145 nodes

  13. Challenges • Grid Computing status • Test-bed is stable only for a closed proximity (in side one organization) • Inter-organization grid is not reliable enough • High network down time • Low bandwidth, Lack multicast feature • Compete with non-critical application like gaming, music download

  14. Consequent • Critical / demanding application can only run reliably on local grid • Inter-organization grid can only be used for testing and minor / light weight application • Unable to explore • data intensive application • Real time collaboration

  15. Thailand National Grid Project (TNGP) • Ministry of Information and Communication Technology • Approved by the Cabinet on December 28,2004 • 219 million baht for 3 years project • Approach • Build a strong infrastructure • Setup an excellence center to oversee the project

  16. GOAL • Building strong IT infrastructure • Support strategic industry such as digital media, auto industry • Support strategic research development such as life science, nanotech, simulation, animation • Build up more high tech manpower for next generation IT industry

  17. Partners • 14 Organization • Kasetsart University • Chulalongkorn University • King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology North Bangkok • King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang • King Mongkut’s University of Technology • Mahidol University • Chiangmai University • Prince of Songkla University • KhonKhaen University • Suranaree University of Technology • Asian Institute of Technology • Silpakorn University • Walailak University • Dept. of Metrological, Ministry of ICT • 2 new one in the next 2 years

  18. Teraflop Site 32 CPU cluster Gigabit Network Upgraded CMU Thailand National Grid Platform AIT KMITNB KKU KU CEGC SUT TMD Mahidol KMITL CU KMUTT Silpakorn WU PSU

  19. New UniNet infrastructure is critical for Grid Computing sucess • Open up a new class of application • Real-time collaboration • E-learning, e-meeting, collaborative design • Data Intensive • Digital media delivery, distributed database, data mining • Compute intensive • Make flexible, extensible, scalable grid into reality for massive computing application like drug discovery, graphics rendering • Uninet and ThaiRen will be key infrastructure that drive new Thailand National grid project

  20. Access Grid Test-Bed

  21. UniNet’s plan for Year2006 • Increase international link from 310 Mbps to 620 Mbps (Internet2 and IIG) • Increase domestic link to regional node from 155 Mbps (STM-1) to STM-16 • ThaiRen (Uninet & NECTEC) • TEIN2 • Promote Grid computing research to universities in Thailand

  22. Thank You
