MMD/FMD Professional Learning Day October 28, 2013
CAP Info • New CAP from KDE regarding Alternate Assessment Eligibility • Mild Mental Disability area of focus. • Many documentation issues.
CAP Info - IEPs • IEPs for Alternate Assessment students should include a lot of detailed information in present levels. • What the student can and cannot do, what supports they need to be able to do those things, etc. • Should include a lot of information about adaptive behaviors, not just misbehavior and/or vocational skills.
CAP Info - IEPs • For a student to be eligible for alternate assessment, there should be a lot of information about adaptive deficits, including goals and objectives. • SDI should also reflect intensive instruction beyond what can be reasonably provided in a general education/resource setting.
CAP – Adaptive Behavior • “Effectiveness or degree with which individuals meet the standards of personal independence and social responsibility expected for age and cultural groups.”
CAP Info – Adaptive Behavior • Communication Skills • Community Use • Self-Direction • Health and Safety • Functional Academics • Self-Care • Home Living • Social Skills • Leisure • Work Skills
CAP Info – IEPs • Communication Status • Should have information about the student’s communication abilities compared to same age peers. Student may not receive speech therapy, but likely does not have commensurate communication. • Include statement indicating that the student is not eligible for speech language therapy, but supports and instruction are embedded within the current class setting.
CAP Info - IEPs • Post Secondary Transition Goals • Eligible students should have goals that can be met with an Alternative Diploma. • Eligible students should be in need of Independent Living Supports.

How do you decide WHAT to teach? • How do you decide WHEN to teach it?
Pacing Guides • Look at each quarter/trimester • What stories, adapted texts, etc. will you use to teach each skill/concept? • What transition activities and assessments can you incorporate?
