  3. Susan Hanson recibió su Ph.D. de la Universidad Northwestern (1973). Antes de ir a la escuela de posgrado, fue voluntario del Cuerpo de Paz en Kenia (1964-1966). Ella es geógrafa urbana con intereses en el género, la economía, el transporte, los mercados de trabajo locales y la sostenibilidad. Hanson ha sido editora de cuatro revistas de Geografía - Geografía Urbana, Geografía Económica, los Anales de la Asociación de Geógrafos Americanos y Geógrafo Profesional -. Actualmente es miembro de los consejos editoriales de varias revistas, incluyendo Medio Ambiente y Planificación A; Actas de la Academia Nacional de Ciencias y Geógrafo Profesional. Hanson es ex presidenta de la Asociación de Geógrafos Americanos y ha sido directora de la Escuela de Geografía de Clark (1988-1995, 2002-2004).
