CA ELA/ELD Draft Framework Two Types of ELD Integrated ELD All teachers with ELs in their classrooms use the CA ELD Standards in tandem with the focal CA CCSS throughout the day and across the disciplines. Designated ELD A protectedtime during the regular school day in which teachers use the CA ELD Standards as the focal standards in ways that build into and from content instructionin order to develop critical language ELs need for content learning in English

Designated ELD Instruction • ELs require BOTH integrated and designated ELD • Not separate or isolated from ELA and other content areas • Encompasses: discourse practices, grammatical structures, vocabulary • Strong emphasis on oral language development • Not a time to teach or reteach content • Requires deep collaboration between teachers

Designated ELD Grouping • ELs should be grouped by language level only during the ELD block • During the rest of the day ELS should be with heterogenous groups • Schools have the choice to decide how it’s structured • ELs must not be removed from core content (ELA, math, etc.) to receive designated ELD instruction
