  1. Ch. 1: Characteristics of LifeQuestions of the Day...Answer in complete sentences • What do organisms need in order to survive? • What is the smallest form of life that you can think of? • What are characteristics of living things? • What is Biology and how is it beneficial? • What might a Biologist study?

  2. Ch. 1: Characteristics of LifeObjectives • Identify the characteristics that living organisms exhibit. • Explain the different fields biologists enter.

  3. Ch. 1 Characteristics of Life • Biology is the study of Life • Biologists study living things, their behaviors, how their systems work, and anything related to living or once living things. • What are some things that biologists would study?

  4. Ch. 1: Characteristics of Life

  5. Ch. 1: Characteristics of Life • Basic Necessities • Food for Energy • Water • Oxygen

  6. Ch. 1 Characteristics of Life • All organisms are made up of at least 1 cell. • Unicellular – 1 cell • Multicellular – Many cells

  7. Ch. 1 Characteristics of Life • QUESTION! • What do you think makes an organism complicated? • Can anything living truly be considered simple?

  8. Ch. 1 Characteristics of Life • All organisms display organization. • Cells • Tissues • Organs • Organ Systems • Organism • Organization goes from basic to increasingly complex...

  9. Ch.1 Characteristics of Life • All organisms grow and develop. • Grow - Add mass to get larger. • Develop – Process of change/maturing • Tadpole => Frog • People do not stay infants. We undergo change and develop over time.

  10. Ch. 1 Characteristics of Life • All organisms reproduce • Asexual – 1 parent divides to become 2 genetically identical offspring (bacteria) • Sexual – 2 parents combine genetic information to produce genetically different offspring (mammals)

  11. Ch. 1 Characteristics of Life • QUESTION! • You see a bear lying down in a forest. There is a stick nearby... How can you determine if it is alive?

  12. Ch. 1 Characteristics of Life • All organisms respond to stimuli • Stimuli – environmental cues that cause a response • Response – reaction to the stimuli • Living things will respond to a stimulus. • Poke the bear...

  13. Ch. 1 Characteristics of Life • All organisms require energy in order to survive. • Carry out processes of life. • Energy molecule used is ATP (adenosine triphosphate) • Produces – organisms that make sugar (plants) • Consumers – organisms that eat the sugar (animals)

  14. Ch. 1 Characteristics of Life • QUESTION! • King crab fishing in Alaska is considered the deadliest job. Why? • What happens if a crew member falls into the freezing (sub zero) Bering Sea?

  15. Ch. 1 Characteristics of Life • All organisms maintain homeostasis • Homeostasis – a controlled internal environment • Human temperature - 98.6 F or 37 C • Blood sugar 80-120 mg/dl • Optimum range for operation • Turtles? Cold blooded. What do they need? • If an organism's internal environment changes and disrupts homeostasis, chemical reactions stop and death can occur.

  16. Ch. 1 Characteristics of Life • QUESTION! • If the Zombie Apocalypse happens, will society and the world as we know it change? • What will people have to do in order to survive?

  17. Ch. 1 Characteristics of Life • All organisms adapt and evolve. • Evolve – changes over a period of time. • Adapt – to become more fit to live in an environment • Evolution occurs when new adaptations show up in a population. • These adaptations arise when changes in DNA occur. • Humans will have to adapt to the new zombie world and evolve to become immune in order the species to survive the zombie apocalypse.

  18. Ch. 1: Characteristics of Life

  19. Ch. 1: Characteristics of Life • Biologists study all things related to living and once living things.

  20. Ch. 1: Characteristics of Life • List all of the characteristics of life and briefly describe each characteristic. • Discuss how one can tell the difference between a living and non living thing. • Work on Ch. 1 Vocabulary
