  2. Hippie Culture “Age of Aquarius” • Idea of Harvard psychology professor Timothy Leary • Rock n Roll • Jeans, tie-died t-shirts • Sexual freedom • Illegal drugs, marijuana and LSD

  3. Timothy Leary • Promoted the use of LSD as mind expanding • Even the CIA used LSD • LSD would become illegal in California in 1966

  4. Opposition to Hippies • Signs saying “Make America Beautiful – give a hippie a haircut”

  5. Height Ashbury • Located in San Francisco, seen as the capital of hippies • Turn away from traditional living arrangements • Communes • Live on streets

  6. Andy Warhol • Art – called Popular Art or Pop Art • Every day items, bright colors and simple

  8. Woodstock Music Festival • August 1969 • Lasted 3 days • Difficult, more people showed up than expected • Limited facilities • Rain • Wavy Gravy – Commune living

  9. Decline of Movement • New life style did not have enough structure such as who would cook and pay bills • Peace and love but no money • Many hippies ended up on welfare, dependent on the society that they had rejected

  10. Hippie Attitudes • “Do your own thing” • Sexual attitudes more casual • Conservative Response • Late 1960s Nixon talked about the decline of American society • J. Edgar Hoover head of FBI warned the counterculture that they would be seen as “revolutionary terrorist”
