Objectives • “An environmentally sensitive ecosystem created by valley farmers” • Differentiate the almond industry from other agricultural crops by being pro-active, environmentally sensitive farmers 2. Top environmental challenges • Air • Water • Crop protection • Endangered species 3. Steps for each of the top environmental challenges • Gather information for a database • Fund research to meet objectives • Disseminate information from projects/research to the almond industry • Identify and educate policy influencers 4. Work toward creating a positive image of farmers 5. Enforcers – How to turn attention to the environmental priority • Economic incentives • Growers save money • Growers receive incentives 6. Evaluation – Measures of adoption of practices • Reduced grower costs • Increased options for growers and new options for doing business • Growers receive incentives • Environmental effects • Cleaner air • Cleaner water • Pesticide Use Reports (PUR’s) reflect the changes

Almond PMA Reduced Risk Research 1995-2002 • Shows commitment by Almond Board, research institutions, and growers • CDPR says pesticide use in California almonds declines 28.6 lbs/ac total pesticides from 1997-2003 • Reduction of annual use of pesticides by almost 3 million pounds (a 20% reduction in pounds applied/acre)
